We’ve installed a total of 10 tado° smart radiator thermostats throughout the house – including the bathrooms – and it’s honestly one of the best upgrades we’ve made. With a toddler and a baby in the house, being able to control the temperature in each room individually has been a massive help, especially during unpredictable UK weather. Installation was surprisingly easy. The app gave clear, step-by-step guidance and each valve only took about 10–15 minutes to fit. Once connected, the system worked seamlessly with our WiFi and Alexa. Now, we only heat the rooms we need, when we need them. For example, we keep the baby’s room warm in the evenings but don’t waste energy heating the spare room or hallway all day. The app is easy to use, and we’ve definitely noticed a drop in our heating bill since making the switch. We haven’t paid for the Auto-Assist subscription yet, and to be honest, it still does plenty without it. But we might give it a go next winter to see how much smarter it gets. If you’re looking to save on heating and gain more control room-by-room, I’d absolutely recommend this system.

Smart control of heating systems was raised in a recent catch-up with some former work colleagues. That got me thinking. After some googling, I happened upon Tado. The reviews I saw were very positive with ease of install was a strong point. I took the plunge and ordered a wired thermostat starter kit, an add-on wired thermostat and 7 smart thermostaric radiator valves. This was to control temperatures in downstairs rooms and have the ability to turn on and off heating upstairs (second wired thermostat). Installation was effortless. The instructions for the wired thermostat were a breeze to follow. Likewise, fitting the thermostatic valves to replace the original thermostatic control units was dead easy. We've have the Tado system running for a few weeks now and are massively impressed on how well it performs. Before, we turned the heating on and off based on how hot the Living Room felt, notwithstanding having mechanical thermostatic valves on all radiators. The previous downstairs wired thermostat was at the end of the hall and unaware of air temperatures elsewhere downstairs. Often times we were enduring 25 C+ living room temperatures with an open fire and central heating both pumping in heat. Now with Tado installed, the heating is left on continuously and, thanks to the Rado smart radiator valves, the temperature is regulated to a constant, comfortable 22C. We can also turn off rooms when they are not being used with ease on the Rado app. That would not have happened in the past as it was too much hassle to go to rooms and turn the thermostatic valves to the off position. We are so impressed with its performance, that we've ordered a further 6 radiator thermostatic valves to control the upstairs radiators. Final comment - we wish we'd known about this technology before the current energy price crisis and were able to take full advantage over the past year of hight energy costs. Final final comment, our three kids are equally impressed by what they've seen and are committed to going down the same route. Can't recommend this enough.

Living in a 80’s detached house where wind seems to hit it constantly, and with 15 rads, I finally caved in to the Tado V3+ kit…and do not regret it. I bought the stat and two 4-pack’s of smart valve heads locally and set them up. I had some teething issues with connection dropping out between the bridge and boiler receiver, but since buying a 3d printed “bridge holder” from Amazon, the connection has been pretty stable. I have read about some with large distances between the boiler and bridge, and having thick walls causing comms issues. I have three toilets and a cold porch, so opted to keep the valves on them as standard lockshields, the way I have set it up is that these four always come on in addition to any smart rads calling for heat. This works for me as they are small single panels or towel warmers, and provide ambient warmth in places it is needed (best practise is to have some rads without thermostatic control anyway). I bought three smart TRV’s for £112 on Amazon, this means I have 11 in total. Having set them up individually in the Tado app with schedules, I find it fantastic as I am not potentially warming 15 rads like I did before with a standard wireless stat set to a specific temperature in one room. It also helps with speed of warming because now the required rads heat up faster as less rads are calling for heat, prior to this some of my rads took ages to warm up even with me balancing the system as best I could. I have tailored the schedule so the kids rooms aren’t being heated when they are at school, or the wife’s work room is not actively heating overnight, weekends or during her office days etc. I have targetted what rooms need what heat, at what times. Then with time I started to see where the heating manifold is and what rooms help heat others, so a little fine tuning here and there has helped even more with reducing usage. Overall, I believe I am saving over 10% in usage versus a traditional stat, but in reality I am warming less areas at a time, and the rooms requiring heat at certain times feels warmer as a result. I fitted this kit in October so expect by the end of the following winter I’ll have at least broken even on my outlay. Easy to fit to most standard TRV’s, with 1.5 x 30mm thread. There is a list on the Tado website of what fits directly. I have changed 1-2 older valves to Drayton 15x15mm ones so I can fit them without use of any adaptors. It only takes a moment or two to fit the smart head onto a compatible valve body, and initialise it. Each head takes two AA batteries, it gets easier to change after the first time. I am using decent LR6 alkaline batteries, and expect they’ll need done 1-2 times a year. I have parental locked the heads from manual use, but if you don’t have kids in the house then twisting the head to the desired temp is a nice little way to boost heating in a particular room. Tado had an offer for a years free access to advanced features like geofencing and open window detection. Geofencing is great for automatically turning down the heating when no users of the app are detected within a close range. Absolutely brilliant if you have a wife who doesn’t make any adjustments via the app when the house is empty all day… Overall, it can be an expensive system to set up and might be a bit daunting for some, but read up as much as you can. I can’t see it being a regretful decision to install these for most people in more modern houses or with large systems.

This might be a lengthy review but hopefully will provide an insight into my less than successful experience. I took some time looking at reviews of various smart heating systems before deciding on Tado. I spent £420 on 1 smart radiator starter kit, 1 smart thermostat and 3 smart radiator valves after consulting with Tado on the best setup for my home and required usage. I retained the hot water control via my existing programmer so didn’t need the extension kit. The items are packaged in a style and branding not dissimilar to that of Apple and although are of a plastic finish seem reasonably robust The online registration and system installation was easy and intuitive, and having a technical background I found it straightforward. I set up three zones, a living room with the smart thermostat and two smart radiator valves as recommended by Tado, a family room with 2 smart radiator valves on both radiators and 1 bedroom with a smart radiator valve. I didn’t want to invest in any more kit until I was sure that it did what Tado said it would. Connection of the internet bridge and pairing of all the components was uncomplicated as was fitting the valves, only two needed the included adapters, (on Danfoss valves.) I set the system up initially on the web interface and then downloaded the Tado App on to my iPhone. Programming the zones for different times and temperatures was simple to do either via the web interface or on the app. So with everything programmed we woke up to a cold house the next morning. The boiler had only fired for a short period. The schedule was set to warm the bedroom and family rooms before the living room which isn’t used until afternoon. Manually starting the living room by increasing the set temperature above the actual recorded temperature then enabled the other zones to warm up in line with the set-point temperatures. Thinking this might have been a one-off I left it but it did the same the next day, cold house in the morning. So it appears that the zone with the smart room thermostat in must be calling for heat before any other zone even though their smart radiator valves are calling for heat. And this is where it all goes downhill with Tado support. I tried throughout the day to call but was unable to get through, just a recording that all agents are busy and to try later (or leave a message.) So I emailed asking for help, and got a response saying that they had made changes to my system (I have no idea what, they didn’t say – and I couldn’t see any changes) to prevent the boiler short firing and not reaching full temperature on first starting and to let them know if it didn’t work. It didn’t so I replied by email but heard no more. I tried ringing but just got the same recorded message. However, they sent me a satisfaction request in dealing with the problem even though they hadn’t and still haven’t fixed it – unbelievable. I now have a response saying they are still dealing with the request for help which will take a few days more. This is not good enough Tado – I’m a new customer with a zone configuration that you recommended and it doesn’t work. Once the system does decide to start up then generally it works fine during the day although there are noticeable variations in the room temperatures before the system turns on the heating again so you can feel the temperature drop and then increase, i.e it doesn't maintain a comfortable constant temperature. You also need to check the actual room temperature with a separate thermometer agains the Tado set point temperatures and then adjust the offset on which ever device is set to monitor the room temperature. I haven’t tried the Geolocation feature yet or the relationship with Apple Homekit as I’d just like to get it working. So in summary, installation set up, programming and control in principle, very good. Functionality not so good Problem resolution and support poor. Tado if you read this I’d like a resolution please (i.d. 426017) so I can return all the items to Amazon for a refund within 30 days if you can’t fix this for me. EDIT- UPDATE. Tado have now fixed the problem remotely. I have therefore revised my rating.

I would not recommend the Tado X thermostat, especially if you are in the UK. It’s simply not designed with UK heating systems in mind. After hiring four separate engineers, none of them could get it working because Tado’s customer support needed to enable specific functionality in the background. This is not something the manual or setup process makes clear, and it’s completely unsuitable for self-installation. If trained professionals can't figure it out, what chance does the average homeowner have? Adding to the frustration, many of the advertised features require an additional subscription, which is not made obvious when purchasing the product. It feels like a hidden cost trap. Customer support was a nightmare. I dealt with one representative, Victoria, who was dismissive and unhelpful. Instead of resolving my issue, she repeatedly closed the support requests without activating the necessary backend functionality to make the thermostat work in the UK. Their support system is slow, dismissive, and utterly unhelpful. After countless hours wasted, I gave up and returned the Tado X to Amazon. I replaced it with the Drayton Wiser, which is a dream by comparison. It’s specifically designed for UK boilers, requires no wiring, and can be installed by anyone. It’s so straightforward that you don’t even need an engineer—something Tado could never claim. Save yourself the headache and skip the Tado X. There are much better options available.

I was fired by Google/Nest as they mothballed my version of the Nest Learning Thermostat. I was incentivized to get a Tado replacement with a discount voucher. The Tado version of the Nest is a bit tinny compared to the hefty and style of the Nest but much better functionality. BUT purpose of this review - I bought some smart radiator thermostat Xs in Black Friday sales AND they are brilliant (bought 5!) Not tinny and each one can communicate directly with the central receiver - game changer. Heating temperature stability up and costs down! I got ChatGPT to help me optimize the settings. Also crazy easy to install took minutes. Customising the per radiator schedules took longer. Very pleased 😊

tado° Wired Smart Thermostats. I have two wired and one wireless. The wireless is connected via the TADO bridge unit and bridge to TADO controller, which also opens hot water valve and serves a radiator zone. The two wired ones are cabled directly to my value to open and close them. I have four zones (Hot Water / Bottom floor / Middle floor / Top Floor). My two wired ones only open and close valves. Although they are on my TADO app, they are not linked to the Heating Zone / Zone Controller (Which calls the boiler), as you can only have one Thermostat linked to the Controller to call the boiler. Having more calling the boiler (via the TADO App and under Settings / Rooms & Devices / Heating Zone / Zone Controller) does not work and the (For me Zone 1 and 2) my wireless thermostat and water zone / feature on the TADO Controller fails to work anymore. My wired Tado thermostats open the valve, which when open, my boiler is called and the hot water is delivered to the radiators. If using in this manor, you should consider having at least one radiator linked to the Wired Thermostat (Via TADO / Settings / Rooms Devices / Select Wireless Thermostat and add at least one radiator). Great bit of kit that allows unlimited Zones

I’m really very impressed with these Tado X Radiator thermostats. They are extremely easy to install, don’t even need to use an adapter with my radiators. The app setup was also easy, just scan the QR code and the app guides you through the installation process. They are even able to tell you that the air quality of the room is like I.e. is it too humid or even detects if a window is open and would stop heating the room if so. Battery life seems to last very well, Tado estimates that these will last roughly one year . You can tell these are a quality product from the moment you pick them up, they are very quiet in their operation of the radiator valve and the dial has a nice satisfying click to them. Got the pack of 3 which worth out roughly over £50 each for these and would absolutely say they are worth the money.
