Justice League 7: Darkseid War

How did I let this storyline go by in the first place? Having to play catch up!
Why oh why did I wait until now to read this great series? Oh sure I picked up and loved Vol. 1 of the Justice League (New 52), but I figured I could take my sweet time reading the collections. Until DC decided to do another relaunch effort with the "Rebirth" storyline. I figured this time I would start off with issue 1. Well that led me to wondering what the heck happened at the end of the JLA run. Not much I see....except for the best JLA storyline I have I ever read. This is epic. I already have the companion collection where the JLA are "Gods" and will get to that collection shorty. I have Vol. 8 on order. Now I am backtracking to see how Superman died (yes, yet again). I will read a few online comics, but have the "End of Superman" collection on-order. I have read Justice League issues #50 and #51, so I know the ending, but the whole Darkseid vs Anti-Monitor story is just fantastic.

Darkseid war
A great start to an epic storyline this one starts off really strong and honestly it could pass for a big crisis, or flashpoint level type of story, it could've been called darkseid crisis. It's great we see two of DC's big bads go up against each other and the justice league are caught in the middle of it and we see them fight, go to different planets, and become Gods and the last page leaves you with a big cliffhanger. If you're a justice league fan you shouldn't miss this one!

Good End...So Far.
This review has been updated in order to correct some errors, should be all good now:Collecting Justice League 40-44 and DC Comics Convergence #1. Darkseid War Part 1 is the first half of a two part story arch. This tale revolves around the two most powerful DC characters coming together for a battle of astronomical proportions. Keep in mind that the story doesn't "end" here, it'll most likely conclude in Darkseid War Part 2; which comes out some time in September of 2016.If you want more, you can read Darkseid War: Power of the Gods in between Darkseid War 1 and 2. And remember these are all Justice League titles so technically the in between book is called "Justice League: The Darkseid War: Power of the Gods".PS, awesome and consistent art work too!

Latest DC Event Falls Short of Greatness
I really wanted to love this one. It’s been since July of last year that we got a new Justice League volume and I was pretty psyched about the Darkseid vs Anti-Monitor war but so far it has not lived up to my expectations. The first problem may be that DC just finished a massive two year Darkseid story arc in the Earth-2 comics culminating with Earths End so this story arc has a bit of a “too soon” feel. I’m also confused with how this story fits in with the DCU. My understanding was that unlike most of the other DCU characters Darkseid lives outside the Multiverse (i.e. there is only one), so my assumption was there was only one Apokolips and one set of New Gods. Imagine my surprise when Steppenwolf appeared despite clearly dying in the events of Earth-2. In fact there is no mention of the several years long events of Earth-2. For a book that references continuity going all the way back to Crisis on Infinite Earths it seems surprisingly ignorant of recent events. The Anti-Monitor has gone through visual alterations over the years but retained a certain distinctive look. Not so this time around. His iconic look has morphed into something more generic and now he’s being referred to by Metron and others as Mobius. This is a bit confusing since Metron rides on his Mobius chair and this is the first time I’ve heard of the Anti-Monitor being referred to by a different name. We get a new backstory for “Mobius” that I don’t think improves the character. The Anti-Monitor also seems diminished. Putting on my nerd hat, Darkseid has generally been shown to be around Superman’s level of power and in a one on one fight they are fairly evenly matched. On the other hand the Anti-Monitor has been shown to be far more powerful than the mightiest hero of Earth so having Darkseid go toe to toe seems incongruous with what we’ve seen in the past. The Anti-Monitor is a character that should be used carefully and sparingly and no character should be capable of manipulating him. Sorry, did I call him Anti-Monitor? I mean Mobius.Putting aside continuity issues or nerdy nit picking my biggest issue is with the overall tone, it’s very dour and bleak. There is nary a moment of levity and this is the kind of stuff hurting DC in its struggle against Marvel. It’s one thing to have a serious, dark story but without any mixture of fun the story can be depressing. Geoff Johns is great at producing memorable moments in his stories and Darkseid War is no exception. My biggest reason for disliking Trinity War was that it was both dour AND lacking in those ‘DAAAAMN!’ moments. I won’t spoil any of the great moments but you’ll know them when you see them. Some people may disagree but I felt like Infinite Crisis was a much better balance of darkness and fun and by fun I don’t necessarily mean humor. Using brooding expository dialogue told in first person inner monologue is not a fun way to tell a story. This is just the first of two volumes but so far I’d put this story arc higher than Trinity War but below Forever Evil. It has a big event feel and some fantastic visuals by a slew of artists including Jason Fabok who’s getting top billing. I’m a sucker for stories that tie into the continuing DC story arc stretching back to Crisis on Infinite Earths and Darkseid War clearly establishes itself as a new piece to the arc but so far it’s definitely not the high point. Nor is it the lowest point. Much of it will depend on how Johns finishes off the story. It’s possible that part two brings the house down but regardless I hope they ditch the new look of the Anti-Monitor.

They did it again
wow. This was yet another mega blockbuster, over the top story from our resident DC golden boy, Geoff Johns. Geoff and Co., oh boy, you guys did it again. great writing. great art. and some great, "Oh they went there" moments. and it ain't even over. Darkseid vs the Anti-Monitor. check. Batman on the Möbius chair. check. Lex and Supes trapped on Apokolips together. check. I love the moment when Bats is on the Möbius chair and he finds out the Joker's true identity, but we as the audience are not privy to that information. love it. can't wait to see this to the end as the trades come out.

Geoff Johns continues to impress with his writing on this series. The artwork also continues to be good.
Collects DC Sneak Peek: Justice League issue #1 and Justice League issues #40-44Geoff Johns continues to impress with his writing on this series. The artwork also continues to be good.In this story, dark forces are at work to bring Darkseid and the Anti-Monitor at odds. As these two super-beings go to war, the Justice League is caught in the middle.I liked the attention given to the history of DC Comics in this book, and it was also fun to read more about the New Gods.

Darkseid Vs Anti-Monitor
I felt this was a fantastic read. I came to this after watching Apokolips War but there was almost no similarity. This story feels far more developed, intricate and mythic in scale. Loved the epic scales of characters and intensity which was graced by amazing art.

Darkside War!

Recomendo.
