Opinel My First - No 7

FIVE stars for having the innovation to market a safer knife for youngsters. I bought this for my 8 year old grandson so he can learn under supervision how to do basic whittling and culinary tasks, with his father. The lock is the same found on other Opinel knives. This knife, by the way, would also work perfectly as a traveler's steak knife, it comes SHARP, right out of the package.The locking mechanism will lock the knife closed as well as open, a fine safety feature not found on many knives.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Love the thin sharp blade that will not stick me, if I drop it. Good spreader, and it slices your breakfast ham steak like a champ. The bravest of us can use it as an eating tool. Dull side to lips kids. Carry on.

My stepson was scared to touch knives and now he is rushing to cut up the tomatoes! Opinel makes some of the sharpest blades out there and this is a great starter to teach the responsibilities of using, cleaning and maintaining a knife. Haven't needed to sharpen it yet after several months and still glides through food so no slipping danger when you hand it to the little one.

The knife is clearly of good quality and seems sharp, although I have yet to use it. I plan to have my ten year old students carve race cars out of balsa wood, and this knife seems like the right tool for the job. The only area for improvement that I see is that the blade is very difficult to open. This is because the groove on the blade, and the amount of blade that sticks out of the handle when it is closed, is far too narrow to get a good grip of the blade to pull it out. Since this is designed for children, I suggest that you add grip material to this section of the knife so it can be opened more easily and safely.

Purchased this as my daughter's first knife. Blunt tip helps the learning curve not be quite so "sharp" (sorry, had to do it). Opinel makes wonderful work knives (I have a No 9 myself) that last a long time with appropriate care. Teaching children to use a knife properly at a young age is a good thing.

My seven year old loves having his own pocket knife just like Dad, and it is easy to use. It is quite sharp, but so far, he has been careful not to injure himself!

This knife is very sharp straight out of the packaging. I bought it as a first “explorer” bushcraft knife for my 5 year old. He loves it, perfect size for him and once taught safe ways to use it’s really safe with the lock and blunted end (no stabby bit). He found it easy to use due to the size, shape and sharpness. It looks like an adventure knife too with its wooden handle. Great knife… I’m going to get an actual No.7 for me now 😊

Have owned a number Opinel knives over the years (pointed end variety) & have been happy with quality (for the price). This rounded end makes this way more versatile - easier to butter bread, scoop jam out of the jar and spread etc etc. A great all round knife for travel.
