Giving Literary Fiction in Translation a Fair Shake
I'm writing this review in part to counter Arab Critic's "review." Let me confess: all I've read of this novel is what's in the Amazon preview for the book. That, however, was enough to get me to order the book, and to be assured that Arab Critic is less interested in actually reviewing a book than in simply condemning or praising one. Having looked over this reviewer's other ratings, I found that he (or she) only give one star or five. Books are nice or they're not. Whatever. Mohammad Rabie--and translator Robin Moger, and publisher Hoopoe Fiction--deserve better than that. I hope my 5 stars give this book another chance--and I look forward to reading it!

This is the worst novel I have ever read in my life
This is the worst novel I have ever read in my life. Full of sadist scenes, vulgar words, long boring scenes. I really do not recommend you to read it.

Meh
Reminds me of 1000 years of solitude . Too bad I don't know much about Egyptian history to fully appreciate the novel
