Mortal Engines: Based on a True Crime

Redirected from the movie
After watching the movie I was left thirsting to know more about the world of Predator Cities. I personally feel that a movie cannot possibly depict what is written in a book entirely so I had to buy this for myself. I can only tell one thing, that is I love this book. I am a die hard fan of fantasy and science fiction and hence this book appeals to those interested in this genrè.The story starts of in a post-apocalyptic world where cities are built/engineered to be mobile and hunt for resources. The present generation are referred to as the ancient ones who have caused irreparable damage to the planet through a 60 minute war. Larger cities hunt for smaller cities and towns and strip them for parts, fuel and food resources. The guild of engineers are responsible to keep the cities up and running while the guild of historians are supposed research or collect ancient tech and maintain museums and artifacts. This book has a lot more to offer than the movie (obviously). It is a short and fun read.

A strange mix
It's a strange mix of middle grade storytelling and death. I'm not sure who to recommend it for- precocious school kids or pretentious young adults. So, I guess everyone can have a go for it.My palate found the prose a touch too prosaic, until all the death caught up and suddenly, Mr. Reeve had discovered how to write. I might just pick up the sequel on a good day.

Strange & Fascinating
An interesting spin on the post-apocalypse genre. Characters are more engaging than in the film. There are scenes in the novel that would have made the film considerably better. In fact, the novel is much better than the film as a whole.

Quite different from the movie
The film got carried away with the extensive special effects needed to realize the traction cities and the airships. They captured the main outline of the story, but made changes that don't really serve the narrative. The author makes the odd decision to alternate between past and present tense. The assault on the shield wall is altered in ways that are visually exciting, but unnecessary. Tom's run to destroy London's engines owes too much to Luke's run at the Death Star. The book was interesting enough to make me want to know what happens next.

Brilliant book series!
A really great series of books to get stuck into. The world Reeve has created is nothing short of brilliant. I’ve read the whole series twice and plan to read again someday, the end of the fourth book is heartbreakingly wonderful and makes you want to start all over again!I find some reviews unfair in declaring it to be underwhelming - it’s very unfair to write a review based upon adult reading standards. There needs to be consideration for the fact these books are aimed at kids and young adults. And for that age group, these books are perfect - there’s detail enough to grasp the concept and plots but it’s not so over-written that younger readers would struggle.I didn’t come across this book series until I was in my twenties, but I have loved it completely. For adults approaching it for the first time: just be open minded to the fact this wasn’t necessarily written for us. It was written for a younger audience. It can, at times, be frustrating - we will naturally crave more detail and depth - but I think that’s actually quite telling to how great these books are. They really do leave you wanting more.

Un argumento original y muy atractivo
Me gustó la película, y la novela me está pareciendo incluso mejor. También me he pedido las tres secuelas, que desgraciadamente no parece que vayan a tener sus correspondientes películas.
