There is no comparison to any other type of litter. Clay non-clumping, clumping, pine-based, corn cob-based, recycled paper based, cedar shavings, shredded paper, etc. I have owned cats my entire life (52 years) and literally tried every type of litter that exists and frankly, most brands of every type. I currently have two cats. A male, who pees like it's his job and a female. I have had up to 4 cats at a time. Crystal litter, of any brand is far and away the best at eliminating odor and reduced tracking. But it's not magic. Cats are still going to throw the litter out of the box so you've got to sweep that up if you don't want to feel like you're walking on glass. Tracking compared to the clumping types is no contest. This stuff rarely leaves the laundry room where we keep the boxes. The clumping litter would sometimes make it up onto my bed all the way on the other side of the house, if it stuck between their toes. So gross!! Crystal litter, of any brand or size has never, ever been found on my furniture, anywhere in my house or even beyond the laundry room door. Crystal litters are pretty much all the same unless they have added colors (this does) or special chemicals to detect illness (this doesn't). The only thing I would say is that the bigger the crystals (these are the biggest I have found), the more they absorb and the heavier the crystals are, which means they are less prone to the cats tossing them out of the box while digging. The tinier crystals don't absorb as much and are more prone to tracking. Let me just say that the review that shows the absolutely saturated litter is not using this product as recommended. They either got a defective bag with far less than 8 Lbs of litter, they are not using enough litter for that bin they are using as a cat box (great idea, actually, but then you need more litter) or they have six cats and one box or they are posting their review for another brand with a smaller bag. It's silica crystals. It's science, not voodoo. If you don't have at least three or four inches of crystal litter in the box, you're going to get what you see in that picture. I've used, not only this brand but others and if you use an entire 7-8 pound bag, per litter box and you have one standard or jumbo sized (the size I use) box per cat, and stir it and change it completely on the schedule recommended, you will never have a box that looks like that. That is a box that doesn't even have enough litter to cover the bottom. Don't do that or this litter is going to disappoint. You have to have several inches or the litter can't absorb the urine. It needs to touch the urine to absorb it. I have periodic back issues and I can admit that I have simply left the boxes go at times, no scooping or stirring for over a month straight and the boxes have never looked like that. The smell has definitely been an issue when I have let it go that long, obviously. Silica crystals can only absorb what they can absorb and then you are going to get puddling and smell. There's a limit. If you have one box per cat, actually fill the box (if you can't use the whole bag because your box is too small, you need bigger boxes or you will have to change it out at two weeks). That's just science. I whole heartedly recommended a full-sized, hooded litter box. One per cat. You got 8 cats? You need 8 boxes and 8 bags of this per month. If you go less, it's not going to do what it's designed to do. No silica crystals can. Brand doesn't matter.

If you are tired of the dusty, heavy mess of traditional litter, do yourself a favor and switch to this. I was so fed up with "normal" litter, but once I tried these crystals, I never looked back. The odor control is incredible. I have this on subscription now because one bag genuinely lasts a solid 3–4 weeks before I notice any smell at all. It masks odors better than anything else I’ve tried. It’s clean, efficient, and makes life with a cat so much easier. Highly recommend setting up the subscription so you never run out!

I first want to add a disclosure that I rarely leave reviews. However, as I order this item on a regular basis, my phone/email/Amazon like to pull up the reviews for this item and ask me my thoughts. After reading some others, I feel it is my duty to correct them. FIRST - I have been using this litter for about 7 months now and I love it. There is more dust than expected, but it's an acceptable amount. SECOND - If you don't like to read and follow instructions, this litter isn't for you. The "sludge" buildup at the bottom of the litter box occurs when you don't scoop and stir every day/other day, as the instructions tell you to do. The crystals soak up the urine and if you don't stir the crystals to even out the "soaking up" process, you will end up with sludgy sludge (that's also uber gross) sitting in the bottom of your box (insert dramatic gasp here). When used as instructed, this litter is GREAT, because it does not stick to the box! That's one of the things I love most about it - no more chunky litter glue like clay litter does, so scooping/cleaning/changing is a BREEZE. THIRD - "tiny poop pieces"?? This isn't feedback on the litter; this is feedback on your cat's diet. Irrelevant. FOURTH - this product works very well for smell (when used as directed). As it gets closer to changing the litter out, you may notice a urine smell (I would think because the crystals can only soak up so much before they start to emit the smell too). For poopy smells - I'm just going to say that the main focal point of this litter is for urine and the bathroom probably doesn't smell that great after you use it, either, so... insert your own analysis of this statement here. FIFTH - fly, crystals, fly! If you are like me (and most of you probably are), you have your litterbox in the bathroom. The "flinging" of this litter is no different from clay litter - your cats party with the same amount of litter and throw it around like it's confetti. THE DIFFERENCE IS - clay litter breaks down so you don't notice it the way you do with this litter! If you are vigilant and clean on a daily basis, this won't be an issue. Although, I will add here that when you step on a piece barefoot, it can sometimes feel like you're stepping on a lego. Again, this pertains to your cleaning habits and NOT THE LITTER. FINALLY - I love this litter, it is great at doing what it's supposed to do, it is very lightweight, it is manageable in terms of changing/cleaning/scooping, and I intend on using it forever (I have two cats and one litterbox). I gave this product four stars because my expectations were probably higher than they should have been and there are minor things that disappointed me (i.e. the dust amount). Aside from this, great litter and you will love it too!

I've been using Fresh Step Crystals, Premium Cat Litter for a while now, and I have to say, it far outperforms traditional clumping litter. First off, it’s incredibly easy to use. Unlike the heavy clumping varieties, Fresh Step Crystals is lightweight, making it a breeze to handle and clean up. One of the biggest surprises is how effective it is at controlling odors. I’ve noticed that it keeps the smell down much better than clumping litter, which I used to struggle with. The crystals absorb moisture and odors so efficiently that I don’t need to worry about unpleasant smells lingering in the house. As for mess, it's not as bad as I expected. Sure, some of the litter tracks out of the box, but it’s not nearly as much as I anticipated. It’s a minor inconvenience compared to the benefits. Plus, it's easy to clean up with a simple sweep. Overall, I’m really impressed with Fresh Step Crystals, Premium Cat Litter. It's lighter, more odor-controlling, and less messy than traditional clumping litter. I’ll definitely continue using it!

I have been using this litter to cover the bottom of the cat box just to soak up the urine smell which it does a good job doing. Then I use the recycled paper over it. The 2 together works well. The box seems to stay cleaner longer with less smell. Very affordable and it is delivered ever 3 months.

I think people who had bad experience with this have used it wrong? We always have 2 or 3 boxes, multiple cats. One box, after cleaning out poop, is left out in sun on the deck to air dry. We stir it a few times. The urine evaporates, and we can bring box in, put next box out. Crystals can last a long time. Way more than regular cat litter. Fresh step is much nicer than the next brand of crystals. This is the only brand we've had that will evaporate if you stir it around out in sun, we also will throw baking soda on the bottom to help absorb odor, As well as a box near cat box. Now with all of that said, this is a summer time cat ltter.. in the winter we go back to regular stuff.

I've been trying out new litter each month and this is the best one so far! I was using pretty litter and I loved it, but it didn't catch my cats UTI so I could no longer justify the price. I tried out a few other litters that weren't great. But this one is perfect so far! The tracking is minimal. My photo shows how much it tracks after both cats have used it and after I've scooped the box. There's a little bit of litter just outside the box, which is to be expected. The crystal are large and don't stick to my cats paws, so the litter doesn't really track much further than the litter mat! And I like that the litter is slightly blue so it's easier to see when cleaning up. It has great odor control. I scoop and stir thoroughly every day. So far I haven't had any problems with smell. I will update if that doesn't last but so far it seems like it will hold up. Very low dust. When my cats use it and when I'm scooping there is no dust. When I'm pouring the litter in and when I'm stirring it there is some dust that comes up but I can handle it. As long as it's not dusting up into my cats lungs, I'm happy. Comparing to pretty litter: This litter tracks less but pretty litter is lighter and easier to throw away. Personally I find the tracking more important, so this litter wins. I bought the regular non health monitoring kind, so it's also much cheaper than pretty litter. So that's great! Especially since pretty litters health monitoring didn't work for my cats. I've decided my search is over, I plan to continue using this litter. If something changes I will come back to this review to update. But I think I've finally found the best litter! :)
