Great Intermediate Level CBT Text
I read this text as part of a course on CBT in my doctoral program and found it very helpful, especially in taking that "next step" in learning to use CBT after reading Judith Beck's book Cognitive Therapy: Basics and Beyond. The text wonderfully highlights the use of behavioral activation and exposure as a means of helping a client engage themselves in an uncomfortable circumstance that will ultimately lead to self-growth, increased awareness, and effective outcomes in treatment. Further, the chapter on affect coping skills was clear, straightforward and to the point, providing helpful examples of how to help an individual deescalate emotionally so that the cognitive model will work in treatment. Probably very good for therapists not meant for patients
Seems like a good book. Some of the reviews seemed to indicate that this was a book meant for patients but it's actually for therapists so I returned it. It's too clinical and dense for most people.

Strategic Decision Making in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy by Dr. Amy Wenzel was very helpful.
Strategic Decision Making in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy by Dr. Amy Wenzel is a hit. It is a go to book which helps therapist to refine their skills and enhance effectiveness. It is a well written, easy to read book with great examples and instructions on how and when decision making in cognitive therapy is helpful. It provides essential information about cognitive therapy and the decision making process that clinician's will need to make when providing psychotherapy. Reading the book helped me to better understand the cognitive model and to become a more effective clinician and cognitive therapist. Psychotherapy has many unexpected twists and turns but Strategic Decision Making in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is the GPS that can help therapist guide their clients to their chosen destinations.

A must read for anyone interested in excelling in CBT!
Dr. Wenzel fills in the complex "middle phase" of CBT that often eludes therapists. Her insight for helping the reader identify the decision points where strategies can be applied is most helpful. Dr. Wenzel's use of tables, specific case examples and options for the therapist are helping me move my clients forward. Written in an easy to read, easy to refer back to format.
