Q: what size is the actual work space?

I also found the main (middle) working space measurement to be 36" x 25(.5)" and would add that the measurement of each side flap is 18" x 25". It allows for a panoramic style puzzle to be done, except of course then you cannot close the carrying case. Also, the extra two loose mats(for sorting or covering) measure 16.5" x 23.5".

Q: if i hold it on my lap to work, will it bend enough to mess up puzzle? & can I store on edge or must it be stored flat?

I put mine on my lap and supported the sides with pillows. It wasn't flat but it was doable and allowed me to stretch my legs out! As for standing it on the side, it was okay at a fairly steep angle very close to 90 degrees, but as soon as it was completely perpendicular to the floor, all the loose pieces not put together slid down :(

It is not too soft. It is a thin fabric covering a board, which also holds the puzzle in place when the mat is folded up. You can open up the mat and the two panels are of the same board/fabric. Lots of space to work on, and the surface holds the pieces nicely and makes the mat portable once closed. It is a well constructed portfolio, portable, and not too soft too work on for me. I am getting one for my sister for Christmas!

Q: Does it have a zipper closure?

No, this one has velcro closures. The PortaPuzzle Deluxe has a zipper but only is available in a 1000 piece version.
