Side effects.Taking vitamin D3 without vitamin K2 may pose risks, primarily related to calcium metabolism and cardiovascular health. Vitamin D3 enhances calcium absorption in the intestines, which is beneficial for bone health. However, without adequate vitamin K2, this increased calcium may not be properly directed to the bones and teeth and could instead deposit in soft tissues, such as arteries, leading to potential issues like arterial calcification. Here are the key risks based on current understanding: Arterial Calcification: Vitamin K2 activates proteins like matrix Gla-protein (MGP), which helps prevent calcium from depositing in blood vessels. Without K2, excess calcium from D3 supplementation could contribute to vascular stiffness or plaque buildup, potentially increasing the risk of cardiovascular issues. Imbalanced Calcium Distribution: Vitamin K2 works synergistically with D3 to ensure calcium is directed to bones and teeth. Without K2, calcium may accumulate in inappropriate places, potentially leading to conditions like hypercalcemia (elevated blood calcium levels) in extreme cases, though this is rare.
