Excellent starter book for a First grader
Got this for my son who is a First grader and developed an interest in playing chess. This book has proved to be an excellent resource for him and collectively, we all as a family are getting better at the game. The text is very well written and the game puzzles are explained with scenarios such that one can develop a deeper understanding of the moves ahead. Younger kids might need some adult help to go through the book, and I think a bit older kids can go through it by themselves.Overall, a top class Chess book to make kids better at the game.

My twelve year old and myself have really benefited from this book. We have learned strategies that practice(playing) alone would not have provided. My twelve year old is now regularly beating me and her father and gaining confidence. She is now interested in going out and playing others to get more experience and improve her game, which is a huge step for a child as shy as our child. Things are explained in an understandable manner and strategies are rational are clear. Brilliant moves through out history are explained so that even us average players can use them. My nine year old is also enjoying the game, though she does not benefit from the strategies as much as my twelve year old. This book is best used for the focused of mind.

Great book
The media could not be loaded. I bought this book for my son looking for a new hobby. I bought it used and it was in great condition much better than expected for a used book! Very happy with the quality of the pages and cover

The concepts and content are very good, but will be difficult for a beginning player.
I have played chess for many years, and am familiar with the row/column notation. This book assumes you understand that notation, and the notation for piece moves, piece takes piece, pawn move notation. Best to actually work through the problems on a board to get familiar with notation and visualization. It is good at demonstrating different attacking techniques, evaluating position, and showing how to think creatively, using actual situations from (master) tournament chess. So, pretty advanced.I would suggest it for 11+ year old players with at least a couple of years experience playing.

Not for beginning adults !
Easiest way for adults to grasp simple concepts is to get a kids version ! This is advanced in the sense that there are so many algebraic notations and detailed descriptions of moves. Several options are presented as to the best and worst scenarios and alternate moves. I spent most of my time deciphering the coded placements of pieces. Not fun at all. Even adults need a bit of easy engagement for quick and non defeating learning. Have ordered other types for beginners ( kids and adult ) in order to glean info from varied sources. This book initially has good info in the first 10 pls., after which it becomes bogged down in atrocious coded details. Returning promptly.

Great book for me!
I don't have kids but I started to play chess a few years ago. I figured that if a chess book was written for a kid, even I could understand and get some use out of it. This book really did help my game and understanding of the mechanics of chess. It is written clearly and easy to understand. Most of the examples in the book are only a few moves long.I play on Chess.com and set my custom puzzle settings to Forks, Pins, and Skewers and practice them regularly. I haven't read the interference chapter yet and I'm interested in the sequel to this book as well as Forcing Chess Moves.

With the Coakley books, this is one of our favorite books. Very accessible and the humor/discussion were very digestable both for the kids and for myself:)We bought the Kindle version and by default the images are postage stamps on the kindle, but you double tap to enlarge them, however you loose the text. The formatting of the board images could be handled better, as there is a lot of dead space around them, but have bought worse kindle formats. Also a fan of his other two books, forcing chess moves and vol 2 of this series.

Not just for kids
I’m in my 50’s and found this a good read. The paper and print is of a much better standard than most chess books and it folds well. It’s not the biggest tactics book out there, I had it done in under a few days, but the examples are good ones.Looking forward to reading vol2.

Not just for kids
I have read countless chess books, but none compare to this excellent read. Don't be fooled by the title, this is a book that can provide so much value to adult players as well as children. The author has cleverly written in a style that makes the book enjoyable and valuable to any age group. This is not another book about simple forks and pins, far from it. This book explains how to see up to three and half moves ahead to give you an amazing advantage in your chess games. Your opponents will be amazed by your foresight. I cannot recommend this book enough.

a grownup is needed to comprehend!
We recently got this book. The concepts are beautifully showcased. But the book is not very easy to comprehend.I have been going through each paragraph multiple times to understand the concept and then sitting with my son (6yrs)There is just no way you can read para by para and explain it to a child he is going to loose interest while you decipher. Its best you understand a section and then sit with your child.
