What Light Hardcover – October 18, 2016

i know it’s a great book but i bought the online book and i’m supposed to be able to read it on the kindle app but it won’t let me past the sample and i’m not sure how to fix it

What Light by Jay Asher is a clean, young adult romance that takes place during the Christmas season. This setting makes What Light perfect for a warm, cozy, winter read! Sierra and her family leave their Oregon tree farm and head to their California tree lot each year around Thanksgiving until Christmas. This might be their last year doing this, so Sierra wants to make it memorable. Her friends in Oregon miss her during this time, while her friend in California, Heather, loves Sierra being near. Heather wants to double date and is trying to find someone for Sierra, but Sierra takes care of that on her own when she meets and gets to know Caleb. There is a bad rumor going around about Caleb and something he did in the past. My curiosity kept me reading and I enjoyed the whole Christmas theme. The realistic kindness warmed my heart. Caleb introduces Sierra to his mom and sister in an awkward moment. The relationship between Caleb and Sierra struggles because of gossip, parents and the long distance between their homes and they have to learn how to handle all of these problems if they want to make their relationship work. A touching romance that's perfect for the holiday season or anytime you want to feel warm and cozy - 4.5 stars!

After all, while her family is selling Christmas trees down south in California, she's still in contact with her friends and school in Oregon. No one can really understand what it's like to travel and be with her family working ten hour days, selling Christmas trees and the holiday spirit to people in the same spot of the small town for almost thirty years. Although she's just in high school, the traditions are part of what she enjoys the most, besides visiting with her best friend in Oregon. When a boy comes to the lot and flirts with her, Sierra ignores him. When he comes back a second time and buys another tree, she's curious about him but her friend convinces her the best thing to do would be to forget him completely. He has a history that's dark and he's not worth the time or trouble. Over time, Sierra starts to know the real Caleb but the town still sees the boy with problems, including her parents.The heart of this book is a story of how love can change you and make you stronger. It's also a story of first love and how braving the unknown takes you places you never imagined. It's about friendship and unspoken codes of honor, about broken friendships and family relationships. Written around Christmastime, it's a book to be enjoyed year round. Read, reread, shared, and so deserving of that special place on your shelf.

I LOVED Jay Asher's other book and pre-ordered this when I saw it was available. It's hard not to compare this novel to his other though and where 13 Reasons had its dark parts and deep message this story was more of a fluffy feel good holiday story. Think Lifetime movie versus ABC Family. The main character is likable enough and given the short amount of time the story spans the reader does see some changes and growth in her, but there's also a lot of points where her decisions seem unrealistic. If you go into this book without expecting too much and just looking for a cute story with a few serious topics thrown in then you will probably love this book. Overall I'm glad I bought it and I will keep reading his novels if he releases more and I would recommend this others, I just can't call it a "must read".

Intrinsic to the novel is the philosophical question "Can a person improve his life or will he always stay the same?" Is a person equivalent to a leopard? Not only can a person turn from past destructive behavior, but the story illustrates how a person becomes his better self. Jay also illustrates that restoration can be made, that light from candles within a chapel on Christmas Eve or lights strung from trees on a hill can illuminate the world for good and replace the darkness; that a person's actions can erase pass errors. This is a powerful book cloaked in an alluring young adult love story.

For a long time I’ve been searching for a powerful but innocent love story that could captivate my heart and mind. This book was an answer to my prayers. As soon as I read the scene where Sierra meets Caleb, I was lost in their world – and I still am.What I love about Sierra and Caleb’s relationship is how genuine it is. It’s not sustained by moments of superficial intimacy, but rather, by heartwarming tenderness and sincere affection. That goes a long way in my book.Jay Asher has an extraordinary gift for tugging on the heartstrings until you’re overwhelmed by how thrilling true love can be. If you’re looking for a sweet romance that will leave you overflowing with good feelings any time of year, look no further.

Here's the thing. I loved Thirteen Reasons Why. But this book is so boring. It's so flat. The writing is not the writing of a NYT best-selling author. I think he wrote Thirteen Reasons Why and it solidified his reputation and bought him a following, but he's not hungry whatsoever anymore.I mean it just read like an amateur writer's self-published debut. Flat dialogue, uninteresting characters, cardboard cutout friends and parents, and a weird backstory for the protag's love interest. What he did should not have had the whole town gossiping about him and casting him out like he was Hester Prynne. It didn't read genuine to me.Better luck next time, Jay.

Was looking for a Christmas read and found so much more!

I loved the background promise of this book - Sierra, who lives with her parents and is still in school, in Oregon but every Christmas they pack up for the month and move to California where their Christmas Tree lot is based - having shipped what they've grown over. So we see her two lives - her 'normal year' and then the Christmas friends. But everything changes in what could be their last year there when Sierra meets a boy - and feels that click. But you know, What Light isn't just a romance novel, or a teenage angst coming of age story. It is steeped in traditions and familiar faces and Jay Asher has really made it feel like these are real people simply because we don't get to know them inside out, as the story jumps between the two towns. Enjoyed reading it.

What Light centres around Sierra, a young girl that has spent her life split between two worlds. The question is, why?My favourite part of this book, was the general Christmas vibe. Un roman sur un amour naissant, un amour à distance. Tout ça dans l'ambiance d'une ferme à sapins et de Noël. J'ai bien aimé les petites références aux chansons de Noël, aux biscuits de Noël, aux chocolats chauds. C'était une romance rapide et assez mignonne pour la période des fêtes.

Not too interesting but isn't too boring.. A normal story of a common girl trying to adjust with her life after shifting.
