Handsome David Page is loved by two very different women: Molly, an overpainted and undereducated floozy. And Florence, a refined graduate of a finishing school. Since both lovelorn ladies are played by Norma Shearer, melodrama fans know they're in for double the romantic heartache. Shearer was on the cusp of stardom when she took these showy dual roles. She makes both women strong characters, but it's her Molly who stands out: blowzy, crude, aching with love and longing for class. And if Shearer seems to have developed a formidable set of shoulders in some scenes where she interacts with herself, there's a reason. Her over-the-shoulder double was played by a young -- and unknown -- Joan Crawford. Review: A Double Shot of Shearer - Norma Shearer plays both main roles in this film, which provides her with a chance to display her acting skills portraying two very different women. The story follows two women; each opposite in every way. The one thing in common with their character, however, is their unselfish heart in being willing to give up the man they love for the other. Norma Shearer is brilliant in this movie. It gets better each time I watch it. It's amazing to see her play each of these women so convincingly and with such sincerity. This is from 1925 and the film quality is good. Also, it has a new music score; piano only. It is perfect. The composer has the music right for each scene and captures the emotions, mood, and feeling of each scene. I am really impressed with this film. It always amazes me how many of these silent films are so breathtaking. Also, in silent films, it is even more placed upon the actors to tell us their thoughts and emotions through their eyes, faces, and body language. The actors who could do this well are true artists. Norma Shearer is one of those artists, in my opinion. There are no special features on the DVD. Review: A great classic for any silent movie fan - I absolutely love Norma Shearer!! This movie really showed off her talent. A fantastic buy and Iโm so glad I have this little gem to my silent movie collection.

1920's Melodrama
Shearer plays the dual role of a trashy flashy dance hall girl and also dewy ingรฉnue and equips herself well in both parts. Malcolm McGregor is the unworthy recipient of both women's attentions. This is a fascinating movie, a poignant study in the cruelty of social inequality in America in the so called roaring 20's. It could have been corny, but the sympathetic and intelligent treatment of the characters make it honestly heartbreaking. Always interesting too, to see a movie that was actually filmed in the 1920's; the costumes, settings, (written) dialogue and attitudes. So removed from the gaudy and vulgarised interpretations of that era by others. Yes, I mean you, Baz Luhrmann.

I love this!
Poor Chunkie Dunn! George K. Arthur is so cute in this movie. The rest of the cast is engaging, too. I didn't think I'ld like a silent movie, but I actually think I like this one more than most "talkies."

Norma Shearer's performance is excellent!
If you are a lover of silent movies, in addition to an admirer of Norma Shearer, this movie is a must have. I loved her performance in one of my favorite films of all time "The Women", but her performance here, or dual performance here (she plays two roles) is amazing.

Norma Shearer Lady of the Night
Bittersweet, greatly acted and shows why silent movies are still important as fine art to this day---Norma Shearer is an almost indescribable talent. whether knowingly sad, faraway wistful, in total control of a scene or light as a feather---this lady exhibits a once in a lifetime talent.---just a foretaste of a great body of acting yet to come.
