19th Century Embroidery Techniques

This book completes my set of these historical technique overviews. I found the first one I purchased in a used book sale. Then I had to have the others. I especially wanted this one, because it covers the Regency period of dress. But I enjoy reading about the history of needlework and embroidery in particular. This book is, like the others in the series, full of beautiful pictures as well as informative narrative. It is not a project book, although it does contain some patterns.

Gail Marsh's books are extraordinarily researched and written! I have all 3 in this set - 18th, 19th, and 20th Century Embroidery techniques. I have done very difficult crewel pieces for 42 years, and now I have the history behind my pictures, bell pulls, stool covers, and pillows. Great photos, wonderful descriptions, and clear provenance - these are WONDERFUL books!!!

I love the excellence of this era's pattern design. The hand craft techniques illustrated in this book are striking. Opportunity to create my hand work is unlimited. A beginner or skilled artisan to embroidery can accomplish a beautiful product. Anyone can gain insight of the importance of the suitable attire and the working life of the embroiderers. It is just so much fun and interesting to read and experience the techniques.

Gives a lot of idea about new projects and techniques. I love the bit of information about the work in those time. I have also the book for the 18th century and it help me a lot in my current project of imbroidery. Very neet.

I appreciated the clear prose and the photographs of the work as needlework progressed. The discussion of tools was most interesting and gave me information as to what I might want to collect.

This is a very good reference book but it can't stand alone if you are a student of either embroidery or historical costuming. I'll focus on embroidery for this review. When the author writes about Whitework, for example, she explains the important fabric/floss/design differences between Mountmellick, Ayrshire, Carrickmacross and Chikan pieces. However, I very much doubt that anyone unfamiliar with these techniques could work from her directions. She does get bonus points for most of her "case studies" especially for the one of the "lace effect on canvas". In short, this is a book worth adding to your library.

Wonderful book.

This is a superb book showing many different techniques. These include the use of beads, braids, embroidery, patchwork and appliqué. There are also descriptions of specific garments and accessories. Included are useable embroidery patterns. Beautiful just to look through, and to use.

This is the 2nd book in this series I bought. I am interested in history and embroidery. These books give you both: immerse oneself in the reading and then practicing.Highly recommended for persons having the same interests

It's a lovely book. However, I thought I could find more ancient embroidery techniques.
