An opportunity missed
Lets get the plus points out of the way first, because there aren't many of them. Firstly, it is cheap, and secondly, there is no other such guide available, so it's better than nothing. The list of negative points is rather longer:-1. Although called a field guide, the book is far too large to take into the field. Also, the soft cardboard cover has not been laminated, so it won't withstand outdoor use.2. The colour photos are separate from the text - a very old fashioned approach. They are rather poor, and the black background dreary. Only around 180 species feature in the photos.3. Illustrations are provided throughout the text, but these are black and white line drawings. These should have been colour paintings, and the photos omitted.4. The book appears to be aimed at the scientific specialist rather than amateur fish keepers. It is full of identification keys.5. Identification is only carried out to genus level. The number of species in each genus is given, but very often, e.g. Heros, the species names are not given.6. Each fish description appears under the heading of its genus name only. The common name is buried in the text, and sometimes, not given at all, e.g. Severum does not appear in the description of Heros.7. The index is poor. It gives only genus names, so, for example if you are interested in the Oscar, but don't know its genus name, you're stuffed.I was looking forward to this book, and am hugely disappointed. I can't help feeling that an opportunity has been missed to produce a classic.

An excellent book for anyone seriously interested in the fishes of greater Amazonia
An excellent and scholarly work for anyone seriously interested in fishes of greater Amazonia. This book is written by 50 of the worlds top fish scientists and deals with every genus of fish currently known in that region. Please note it provides only limited information on species within those genera. A lovely and fascinating book suitable for students, academics, importers of tropical fish and serious aquarists.

A serious book
This is a monumental work! A book for the serious ichthyologist rather than the more typical fish tank enthusiast. The book is primarily about fish in their natural habitat - useful if setting up bio-type aquarium for Amazonian fishes.Reasonably priced and well produced.
