---> HOW TO INSTALL DRIVER FOR WINDOWS 7 <---
FIX & FIGURED OUT!First let me say that before I correctly installed the proper driver first, plugging the Cable into the Radio & the PC would put the Baofeng UV-5R into Transmit mode, and cause my PC to shut down. Here is how you fix that!Important: DO NOT plug in the cable to the radio until you get the driver installed. This may cause an excessive power demand from your PC's USB port and cause shut down or damage. Here is the quick & easy way to install a working driver that is already inside of Windows.Plug in the USB Radio Cable to your PC only.Wait for Windows to recognize the new device. (If Windows does not recognize device, go to Device Manager to configure USB Cable driver.)When asked for a driver/location select Install Driver Manually.Select HAVE DISC button. For the TYPE of device scroll down & select PORTSFor the driver manufacturer scroll down & select PROLIFIC(The USB Serial GPS should be selected on right half of window.)Windows will give you a warning about the driver, just ignore and continue.Make sure you look to remember which Port it used. (Ex. COM7)If you forget which Port is used, you can bring up Device Manager to find the device & port.If you install Chirp software, you will need to configure it for the Baofeng UV-5R. Make sure you select the correct Port# or it will not find your radio. It will also give you a warning about Baofeng compatibility, just ignore that and continue to "clone" the information from your radio into Chirp software. When the radio is SENDING information to the software app, the light on the radio will blink RED.When the radio is RECEIVING information from the software app, the light will blink GREEN.Below is an alternate method for installing the software that came on the mini CD-ROM disc.Okay folks...I had the similar problems of not being able to install the driver, nor the WIN7 OS being able to assign a correct one so here is what I did to make it work - EASY!1. Insert the small drivers disc into your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM.2. Navigate to the root directory and you will see the Folder "M_K"3. Go inside the "M_K" folder and you will see a folder named "USB"4. Go inside the USB folder and you will see another folder named "ζ°ηι©±ε¨" Example: F:\M_K\USB\ζ°ηι©±ε¨ (where "F:" is your CD/DVD drive.)5. Inside the folder named "ζ°ηι©±ε¨" you will see a file named: "PL2303_Prolific_DriverInstaller_v1.7.0.exe"6. Copy that file to a temporary folder somewhere on your hard drive (C:)7. You can now run the file without it crashing!8. The installation should go without any issues and report that the USB driver has been installed correctly. For some reason, the file is not able to run from the root directory on the mini CD-ROM, and needs to be copied to your computer to run.You may also want to right-click ("I said, RIGHT-CLICK!") and select "Run as Administrator" if there are problems. I didn't have any, but I am logged on as Administrator of my machine and only have one logon account for this machine. Please gimme a thumbs up by clicking the "this helped me out" button below!

Cable works well, software needs help
I bought this along with my Baofeng UV-5R HT. After a few missteps with COM ports (since this cable seems to be a USB-to-serial adaptor) I finally got it working both on my shack computer running Vista and my laptop running Win7.The only problem I have is with the software itself. I did manage to program my Baofeng OK with it, but EVERY time you bring it up, all the text is in question marks, probably because it tries to display in Chinese. So you have to remember the right spot on the menu where to change the language to English, then the question marks turn into English text. There is no way to get it to come up in English every time. The dialogue windows are written in Engrish. This is not really detrimental, just amusing. The software has absolutely no help files. So if you're not sure what to do, you have to figure it out on your own. I was able to but it would have been faster had there been a help file.Once I was up & running it didn't take me long to program my Baofeng. I did discover that when I programmed the NOAA weather channels and some local police & fire frequencies in, if you blank out the transmit frequency in each channel then you won't be able to transmit on those frequencies. That way you can listen to police frequencies without having to worry about accidentally transmitting on them. One thing that's neat is that you can program any offset in the memory channels. If you wanted to operate cross band duplex, you could for example, program a channel to receive on a 2m frequency and transmit on a 70 cm frequency. The software just has one cell for receive frequency and one for transmit frequency. One thing I wish was that it would allow you to use more than just 6 characters for the channel names, but that may be a limitation of the radio itself. At any rate it's not hard to abbreviate. So all in all, the cable works great, it can be a bit of a pain to get the drivers set up right, and the Baofeng programming software is not that great. I do believe there's another program out there called Chirp which will program these radios but I haven't downloaded it.

Works like it should and no reason to deduct stars
Well...... Rating this is tough for me. However, the problem might partially be me. On the down side I would rate 1 or 2 stars, on the up side 5 stars.B4 I go on... I paid 5 or so bucks for this. If you don't want any hassles go buy the expensive cable guessing 20 - 30 bucks.Con: Having to dig through the reviews to find someone who successfully got this to work and follow their instructions.Pro: Works like it should and no reason to deduct stars.I am using Win 8.1 so none of the drivers on the provided disk worked. I got the warning triangle in Device Manager and several error codes. After reading some of the reviews and some 'work' I got the cable to work fine with my BF-F9V2+ HP.Bottom line, the driver had to be V3.2.0.0 dated 7/31/2007.The Software when installed had '??' all over (Chinese text). I moused around clicking the different '??' and finally found one that had the word 'English'. Bingo!!!! all the proper text showed up just fine. As others have said go get the CHIP software. Anyway, after finding the 3.2.0.0 driver and running the provided software (in English) all was just fine.A little work but all is well. I'm probably going to but another one and cut off the USB side of the cable. I'll use the Plug for external amplified speaker and external Mic. The in radio speaker and mic for the radio above is really clear. Love that radio73's

Cable fine, but radio comms need attention.
This worked, and delivery was pretty quick. However, the Baofeng is a bit odd in that strange things happen in communicating with it via the PC. From what others say, this is a radio, not cable issue. To successfully transfer the data from my PC, I had to have it all ready to transmit, shove the cable into the radio, and quickly press 'send' on the (freeware) 'CHIRP' program. That's because if you just connect the cable, the radio instantly goes into a permanent transmitting mode. To avoid unexpected finals damage this way, make sure you have an antenna connected when you program the unit! All said and done, it is still much easier and quicker than programming via the radio's keyboard and highly unintuitive key sequences!

Excellent product
Bought an earlier one off an ebay seller but it didn't work. This worked perfectly and I was able to reprogramme 6 walkie talkies in less than ten minutes including making a mirror image backup of each in case they ever need to be rolled back to their original configuration. The walkie talkies involved were Baofeng BF-A5 using Chirp programming software.

Dont' bother if you run a Mac
I hate it because on my Mac, I've wasted a lot of time to get it working, and I mean a lot of time downloading drivers. Like most Chinese electronic products, they tend to not support a Mac. It might work for you on a PC. But from my POV it's a big thumbs down.

Seems fine on my ancient Win 98 box but would rather ...
According to Windows 10 and various websites on the subject, this is a clone of a device rather than the 'real' thing and refuses to work. Seems fine on my ancient Win 98 box but would rather it worked in my current device.
