C++ in 24 Hours, Sams Teach Yourself

Good book for beginners like me.

The book shows you in 24 hrs what it took a semester for me to grasp.

Looks like a new book.

After taking a c++ with an awful wordy book, this book has been a blessing. It makes sense, its funny, it breaks down nicely, not wordy and well organized. I am currently using it to sharpen up my c++ skills before taking part two which is data structures next year. Highly recommend this book, it makes programming fun and relax which is needed to learn this language.

The book did not come with a CD.

I love this book. I'm a Linux user (Ubuntu), and this book is exactly what I wanted. Everything that you need to get started is already on your computer - Gedit and G++. There are no downloads of additional software required! When you have this book in your hands, you are ready to go. The directions are clear. People who have experience with Python, like myself, will burn through this book pretty easily.

I am a firm believer in the usefulness of introductory, not intimidating books like the "for dummies" or "24 hours" ones. I have been in the position of having to learn a difficult subject from scratch and little or no background, and I know how helpful a little "hand holding" can be. A few of this books manage to make the difficult easy and refrain to elaborate on the finer points, many more just skim the surface and leave you with only the impression of having learnt something. This book falls kind of in between. The first chapters are ok, they do good job of explaining "the classics" (variables , functions, pointers and references, classes) without putting you to sleep, but from there things start to go downhill. Polymorphism is presented like an afterthought in way that fails to convey its fundamental importance, templates are given a way too superficial treatment, and C++ 11 and 14 new features are barely hinted at. I was particularly disappointed by the shamefully short treatment of Lambdas. And exception handling is treated only in the last chapter? And no mention of the STL??? You can basically walk out of this book with no idea that a standard library for algorithms and data structures exists, and how lambdas make it easier and more fun to work with it. Also, giving your own little version of Array and Linked List classes to illustrate language features is a bad, very bad idea. In conclusion, not a bad book overall, but it comes short on so many aspects that I don't think it makes a good starting point even for the total newbie. I would rather still go for Beginning C++ I did like the end of chapter random non C++ related questions and answer , though :)

This book really need detailed instructions on installing and using a compiler. Book is useless without 1.
