yes, I'm sure that you could use markers on these plates,

No. They are very basic, but good paper plates

Q: are these plates coated with anything

The paper plates have a smooth finish...not sure what produces that finish. They are light weight and very flexible,not designed for heavy wet food. I use paper plate "holders" from Miles Kimball to add stability and only use thesepaper plates for light snacks, sandwiches, chips, etc. Household tip: They make a great cover for microwaving tosave splatter and to prevent food like pasta from drying out.
