Dear Sarah, The "N" & "M" refer to width, N for Narrow, M for Medium. Birkenstock also uses "R" for Regular which is also Medium. The "EURO-METRC" sizing codes can be confusing, many times they will overlap them with US sizing, which can be even more confusing! I hope this helps. Q: What's the difference between birkibuc, birkoflor, nubuck & plain ol birkenstock shoes? i am so confused!

birkibuc is faux sued, birkoflor is faux leather, nubuck is suede or brushed leather, and plain old birkenstock are made with leather.

Q: What does the M and the R stand for in the sizes? For example, what does 40 R mean?

Birkenstock usually come in two widths. Regular and narrow. Some retailers will say M, medium instead of regular but they are the same thing.

Q: Are these real birkenstocks?

To be perfectly honest with you, I won't know the difference. I wear both and the comfort levels are the same. Whether Betula's or Birkenstocks, I believe you will love them both. I just compared boxes of the Birkenstocks and Betula's in my closet. The information is the same on both. The insole:leather, foot bed:natural cork, upper, Birko-flor, sole:EVA. The same material is used on both and you wouldn't know the difference. I have worn both over 40 years and the comfort is identical. I purchased a black pair, of Mayari, from Zappos and paid over $100. They don't feel any different than the $44 Betula's I purchased from Amazon. They both feel great and who can beat the price at Amazon? Hope this helps.

Love the shoe

Love the shoe! Super comfortable and true to size. I have an extremely flat foot and it’s somewhat wide so I made sure to try on in store for sizing. I have trouble with my back and hips, and with flat feet I have trouble finding comfortable shoes that don’t make my issues worst. I was nervous about the arch but they contour to the foot shape nicely. Make sure you given them some time to break in and they will be the most comfortable shoe you own.Shipping was difficult as they lost my package and didn’t want to honor the price that I originally purchased for, actually several promises by Amazon employees weren’t honored even with screenshots of conversations via chat. With some back and forth I eventually received the shoe for the original price. After having this shoe for sometime now and wearing nearly everyday I would gladly pay any price for the comfort they provide.
