How is this different from the base game and the conversion kit?

2 differences i found are there is no watering hole piece, and many of the base game cards are modified to play climate expansion. The climate cards can still play the base game, but they have more text on them that makes them climate expansion compatible.If you buy base game separately and the conversion kit, you should get a watering hole piece and 2 sets of cards, the base game cards, and the modified base game cards for climate expansion.

Can I use this game to play the basic Evolution game on? I'd like to try Climate but I'm concerned it will be too complex.

You definitely can. When we first played, we played without the climate expansion, for simplicity. The rules even explain what to take out if you're doing so. It's a super fun game and easy to get the hang of we all love it! The climate part really isn't too complex once you understand the rules
