I used a PT 1 x 6 which I ripped close to size then jointed that to get a good fit to the guide
Works as it should. The allen screws have paint inside which screws up the wrench fit. I bought replacement screws before I realized the paint was the problem. The bubble level is put on with weak chewing gum. I bought two of these and both levels fell off within two days. There were no instructions with the guide. It cannot be used with a 2 x 4 as the guide width is too big for a regular 2 x 4. You have to rip a board to fit the guide. I used a PT 1 x 6 which I ripped close to size then jointed that to get a good fit to the guide. Regardless of the issues it works great. I've ripped about 30 logs with it and like it. It is possible to get a nice square surface beam with it. If you work the saw and move the bar a lot the cut will be scored. If you go slow and keep the bar steady you get a nice smooth surface.

Great price and was able to make great cuts.
I got a ripping chain and cutting logs down with a chalk line and doing it freehand. I was just not happy with the cuts I was getting. I looked and found this beam cutter a very happy other than i added some aluminum stock to put under the screws that fit it to the bar. The last 2 layers on tops along with the top piece was all cut using the beam cutter. I had to cut a 2x6 down to fit the guide as I did not like the slop I had on a 2x4. I hope the video uploads as I like it and would feel comfortable slabbing a log out. This was all cottonwood so I was looking to make a better backstop, then just stacked up logs. I used the scrap for the sides to hold the dirt in.

Worst manual ever. (Update)
Just unpacked my Timber Tuff Beam Cutter. Quite possibly the worst "owner's manual" I have ever seen, and I used to LIVE in China, so that's saying a lot. I was surprised to see 3 pointed pins on the underside of the tool - I thought it was supposed to slide on a 2x4. The pins seem likely to dig in, what with the weight of the saw and all. Unfortunately the owner's manual has absolutely nothing to say about what the pins are for, how to set up the tool, how to clamp the saw into it or, frankly, anything else in the way of useful information. The photo I attached is just about the entire "manual." The cover page has a photo (same one Amazon uses), the model number, and the following irrelevant warning: "Carefully read and understand all ASSEMBLY AND OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS before operating. Failure to follow the safety rules and other basic safety precautions may result in serious injury." On the back cover (we're talking about a single sheet of paper here) is the following advice regarding maintenance of the tool: "Keep the beam cutter in good repair by adopting a program of conscientious repair and maintenance in accordance with the recommended procedures found in this manual." Right. So...do nothing, since there ARE no procedures of any kind in the manual. Look, I get it, what do I expect for $20, right? Well, for starters, how about an explanation of what those 3 sharp pins are supposed to do for me? It comes in a really nice and sturdy box, though. I'll let you know if I can make the thing work. UPDATE: The best way to learn to use this thing is to try it. Turns out that my main problem was assuming you just clamp in your saw, and slide the channel down the 2x4. Actually what you do is cut in steps: position the beam cutter channel then rock your saw in an arc to make a cut, then move the beam cutter down the 2x4 and repeat. The pins keep the thing stable while you make the cut. One issue remains, though. The channel is too wide, so getting a consistent thickness that won't require a lot of planing requires you to try to hold the inside edge of the channel against the 2x4. Tricky to do, though. I drilled and tapped and installed bolts in the edge opposite the saw clamp to take up the slack. This gives the tool more stability, gives you one less thing to concentrate on while making the cuts and tightens everything up. This really is a good tool for $20, or for 3x that amount for that matter.

Works as designed, worth the money, could use a tweak or two
I used a log about 8” due at the big end around 4” at small. Spit balled a 2x4” on it with some nails. I didn’t bother with measurements or levels, just a quick try out. Turned out an almost kinda square 3.5x4 8’ section that was nice. Quick and easy just for practice. There is a learning curve to it I wouldn’t expect factory grade squared stock right away. 3 stars because despite working as designed there are flaws; the bracket doesn’t and obviously can’t fit every 2x4 and there is no clean way to take up 1/4” gap so it’s real easy to get some uneven parts. There were no instructions but a product booklet says to read them. There is no Allen key with which to tighten the clamp to the bar. Would be nice to make the bracket wider so an adjustable shim could be made to take up slack. Just a sled shaped piece of metal with similar Allen screws to the bar clamp would probably do the trick. Maybe I am being a little hard on it with 3 stars, it definitely works and I will replace it should I ever need to. I doubt I will need a second one because it certainly is built tough. The best part I think, you can literally drop a tree then mill it to square or flat stock on the spot, which reduces the size of equipment needed to haul the full sized logs out.

Love it
I love this thing. I’m out “slabbing” every log I have. Not hard to attach to your saw either. Set up for each cut can be tedious, but that’s probably just me…lol

Looks like it will work
This item was delivered a day ahead of its scheduled time. I haven’t used it yet but looks like it will work for my use and is very good quality. I like the spirit level feature built into it that most others don’t have

Don't waste your time
Don't waste your time. This beam cutter is the worst I have ever bought, spend the extra money and get a better chainsaw mill or better beam cutter. Straight out of the box it is all of a half inch out of square with the chainsaw bar when mounted. Both holes on mine are drilled at opposite angles so it moves on the bar when in use. I have tried to put it back into square but only gained a eighth of an inch. On the plus side the level works...

Too easy. Too much fun.
Wow! Easy to use, great results. However I'd recommend buying one that is adjustable to cut boards with far less set-up. I loved making lumber with just a chainsaw.

disappointing
It's too loose on a 2x4 from the lumber store, 1 1/2 x 3 1/2. The beam cutter easily shifts from side to side making a very messy cut. It is also too small to fit over a milled 2x4, 2x4. I cut down the milled 2x4 to fit. There are 3 pins that stick into the 2x4. I can see how sometimes this helps, but it also sticks when it shouldn't and makes a mess of the cut into the log. I made several practice cuts and watched several videos and can't get a decent cut. Even the people making the videos are struggling to make a cut. They often show the cut they made and its a mess. I bought this to cut out window and door frames in a log home. The cuts are very jagged and unusable. I don't have a lot experience with free hand cutting, I have only built 1 log home, but a free hand cut is much better than the TMW-57.

Le meilleur guide pour scie à chaine
Beaucoup plus solide que les modèles moins cher avec fixation de fer forgé. Celui-ci est entièrement fait d'acier. Excellent achat.
