Not long after, they were sent out on a rescue mission in a rickety plane that had been cannibalized for parts. The plane went down over the Pacific. Adrift on a raft with his pilot and the new tail gunner, Louis floated for more than a month until their raft reached Japanese territory, where the living men were taken prisoner.
