can you replace the chuck for use with hex bits?

It holds the longer, 1/4 inch hex bits quite well, especially the impact or quick release style. There's teeth on the edges of the jaws part way in that seem to help. Just be sure to tighten the shell a good deal. I just got a three prong chuck with a hex shank for impact drivers, and it allows me to use round shank bits as well, though adds a few inches to the whole setup. You can get a WoodOwl square to 1/4 hex adapter that also works well for the short bits, like screwdriver bits, or Taytools also has a couple of larger hex adapters for modern auger bits etc.

What is the chuck size? 1/2"

My set of augers have 3/8" as largest hex shank. Works well with all of them. May accommodate a 1/2" but I haven't tried it.

is a 12" brace too big and should I use a 10" brace instead?

The larger the brace the more Torque it will produce as you turn the handle. This way you can bore holes in harder, thicker wood...

surprising quality at this price, and works for my hex shank Wood Owl bits

[Sue's husband] I have long considered finding one of the old Bell Stanley braces for +- $125 but saw this one for under $50, thought it looked like it had wood handles, and took a chance. If feels very solid and well-made. The end handle is removable for lubrication. The chuck locks, freewheels, or ratchets clockwise or counter. The switching mechanism feels solid. I chucked my 1 1/4" Wood Owl hex shank bit and drilled through a 1 1/2" board no problem. I can imagine situations where a hex shank bit might not lock in perfectly, but my needs will never exceed that test, and if I ever change my mind, TayTools has an adapter for $20 which wil solve the problem.[/Sue's husband]
