Hot Tools Pro Artist 24K Gold Marcel Iron | Long Lasting Curls, Waves (3/8 in)

I have been considering going to cosmetology school and heard from many cosmetology students that using a Marcel curling iron was one of the hardest things to get used to, so I thought I would get one to practice with. For context, I’ve never done well with regular curling irons because my hand/wrist coordination never cooperated and I’d end up more frustrated than anything.I was amazed that after I got the hang of this, it was so easy to use and curl my hair quickly. Because of how a marcel iron is designed, you can do the curling motion without turning your wrist and apparently that was the game changer I needed.Now for this particular curling iron— I love that you can control the temperature. I have fine/thin hair so I don’t need it to be that hot, plus my hair is damaged so I don’t want to fry it off completely. It heats up fairly quickly and is comfortable to hold in my hand. I love the stand, so it doesn’t damage my getting ready table. I always use leave-in conditioner or a hairspray with heat protectant before using it, but it’s easy to clean off any residue from the iron.

Hot Tools have a temperature control setting, are durable and long lasting! There is a lock button if you prefer the handle to be stationary! This size is perfect for short hair or for creating curls on longer hair. Overall, a good value with great performance!

I believe this had a few negative reviews because it can be difficult for people who aren’t familiar with the marcel style curling iron. Most professionals use marcel curling irons. This isn’t your typical spring curling iron. You have to understand how to use them and know that they work differently.I thought that this was a great value for the money! Works just as well as more higher priced professional marcel irons!Created amazing curls!I highly suggest this curling iron for anyone experienced with a marcel style iron. If you have only used spring curling irons, please know that this isn’t for you unless you are attempting to learn how to use a professional marcel.

First off, if you've never used a Marcel-style iron before, understand it is a bit different. First time I got one it was by accident and if it hasn't been for needing it immediately for an imminent wedding, I probably would have returned it! I'm so glad I didn't because once you adjust to it, you'll never go back. In fact using the old spring-clip style will seem clumsy, unwieldy and SLOW. This particular version has a nice grip, heats up fast, and has a very nice range of temperatures from just hot to VERY hot. I recommend you experiment and use the lowest heat which is effective for your hair type. Also be sure to click the unlock button when you try it the first time or you'll never get the hang if it. Before long you'll be flicking your wrist like a pro, churning out curls in seconds. The other great thing is that it stays consistently hot from one curl to the next, where many irons can't keep up, cooling as you work and taking more seconds per subsequent curl. The 1" barrel is also an excellent size for natural looking not-too-tight, not-too-loose curls. Honestly the only thing I preferred about my 10 year old version was that the cord came out dead center at the base of the iron, while this one is off- center, but please. That's not even worth deducting a star for! Hope this was helpful in your decision. Cheers!

Love this iron. Was recommended by my hairdresser to get it. Takes some finagling to use and some work to get used to it. I feel I am still learning to use it, but I do love the iron. You can do beach waves, half curls, really anything. BE CAREFUL because it swings around and doesn't stop like a regular curling iron would, however; you can lock it so it doesn't roll out of control. I love it, and this is definitely the cheapest I have seen it for sale!!! Great deal! This is not a paid promotion but if Hot Tools or someone wants to send me hair products to try I have a full head of curly hair that I love to blow out and either add wavey beach curls or fully straighten it.

I like that the wand spins to keep the cord from twisting and curly up. You may want to use a heat protective glove until you get the hang of using it because there is no cool tip at the end. My hair type is thick and coarse and this iron curls it with ease.

My stylist recommended this iron to me. I never had a marcel before but watched a YouTube video and decided it was easy enough to learn. Very easy to handle if you want to use it on someone else, but if you are trying to curl your own hair away from your face, it feels like the handle is on the wrong side; you have to use your thumb instead of your fingers and it's awkward. Leaving that aside, I love the way it rolls in your hand. Curling is super fast once you've clamped. The heat seems right (low heat is truly low, unlike some other brands). But my one disappointment is how short the barrel is. The same brand makes a 2" extended barrel iron that I think would have been a better match for me, but at twice the price, I am hesitant. I would buy the marcel version of that if it were available. The awkward handle is nothing compared to that sweet rolling action.
