Definitely YA still a good read
I liked the magic system and the old world charm. The book was good along with the concept. Definitely YA so I'm not sure if I will continue with the series

ah a new series
If you like magic good and bad this is worth your time . It is said magic is just science we don’t understand yet. Makes me wonder.

Surprisingly good book!
This is really geared toward young adults but adults will find it very entertaining. A young man, Lukas, finds himself an orphan and separated from his sister. His mother is imprisoned for witchcraft and his father murdered. The men responsible are searching for him to take his life while destroying the only home he’s ever known. He witnesses his mother being burned at the stake with her dying words that he should find his sister and save her from the beast that destroyed their lives. Lukas sets out to find his sister, a 12 year old boy with no money, no food, and not much hope. His only possession is his father’s sword and the training his father has instilled in him over the years. He crosses paths with a traveling group of actors who take him in. The leader of this menagerie, a former black musketeer, like Lukas’s father, proceeds to teach him more. Lukas makes life long friends among them and eventually confronts his parents killer, finds his sister, and makes more friends because of his stellar honor and sense of duty. The storyline while predictable is still presented in a capable and enjoyable style of writing. This was a book club pick and I really enjoyed reading it. Middle school age kids will have a blast with this one!

An intriguing story.
Not bad. Starts out a little slow but builds to the end. The story will be fleshed out in the subsequent books I assume.

Action and magic
Having been a fan of Oliver Pötzsch since the Hangman's Daughter series, the Book of the Night was filled with swashbuckling action, die-hard friendship and a dose of sinister evil countered by a white witch. All in all a fun read. The only reason for the one star markdown was Pötzsch's choice of narrator. Thoroughly American, he was incapable of even a trace of any convincing German accent, including the total butchery of German names and places. He even spoke the German letter ß as a "b" when it is actually a double "s" sound. Made me feel at times that the story took place in the Midwest. So read it; don't bother with Audible.

Another Potzsch success
I chose this rating because I read the Hangman 's Daughter series and those books were so exciting that I just couldn't give this one that 5th star. This book is also a very good read and I highly recommend it. The story is woven with intrigue, history and love between family and friends. I couldn't wait to find out the next adventure for Lukas and his friends and just how they would get themselves out of this dangerous situation. I am a Potzsch fan.

Another enjoyable book by Oliver
I have read the Hangman's Daughter series and really enjoy the way Oliver lays out the story. His characters are fun and interesting. I always look forward to his next book. The only downside for me is it had a hint of Harry Potter with the main character learning of his destiny in the wake of his dead parents. Honestly, the story is strong enough on it's own to stand apart. Great read for me. I am usually reading 3 to 4 books at a time and few of them are for just plain fictional fun. Oliver is one of my go to authors when I want an enjoyable just for fun read. Keep them coming please.

Potzsch writes another great adventure
I am hooked on this author. I randomly discovered The Hangman's Daughter and have since read every book of his released in the US. This one is not my favorite (I think the first HMD has remained my favorite although there have been a few contenders), I will admit, but I still liked it and would certainly recommend. I think some might even like it more than HMD, just depends on different tastes or preferences. If this is a new author to you and you like historical novels showing the darker side of history and humanity, well written, and likeable characters despite themselves, I recommend that you clear your calendar and buy the lot.

Lovely lively story
Have read most of Potzsch hangman series which I thoroughly enjoyed, so was a little apprehensive about this tale, but I wasn't disappointed, great characters and storylines, and once again all the wonderful Bavarian countryside and towns.

Too fantastical for my tastes
Selected this book as the author was known to me from the Hangman's Daughter series. This contained too many magic tricks and apparitions which detracted from the story.
