will this be suitable for tightening a plastic nut on water butt feed hose

It is a plumbers wrench so I have used it on modern plastic plumbing nuts. So it should be fine but take care with water butts as the plastic plumbing pieces are often open to the sun and so can become brittle and less water tight. Tighten with care! A drop of WD40 can often help before you tighten.
