Now revised and updated--John Lennox's acclaimed method of reading and interpreting the first chapters of Genesis without discounting either science or Scripture. What did the writer of Genesis mean by "the first day?" Are the seven days in Genesis 1 a literal week or a series of time periods? If I believe that the earth is 4.5 billion years old as cosmologists believe, am I denying the authority of Scripture? With examples from history, a brief but thorough exploration of the major interpretations, and a look into the particular significance of the creation of human beings, Lennox suggests that Christians can heed modern scientific knowledge while staying faithful to the biblical narrative. He moves beyond a simple response to the controversy, insisting that Genesis teaches us far more about the God of Jesus Christ and about God's intention for creation than it does about the age of the earth. With this book, Lennox offers a careful and accessible introduction to a scientifically-savvy, theologically-astute, and Scripturally faithful interpretation of Genesis. Since its publication in 2011, this book has enabled many readers to see that the major controversy with which it engages can be resolved without compromising commitment to the authority of Scripture. In this newly revised and expanded edition, John clarifies his arguments, responds to comments and critiques of the past decade since its first publication. In particular, he describes some of the history up to modern times of Jewish scholarly interpretation of the Genesis creation narrative as well as spelling out in more detail the breadth of views in the Great Tradition of interpretation due to the early Church Fathers. He shows that, contrary to what many people think, much of the difficulty with understanding the biblical texts does not arise from modern science but from attempting to elucidate the texts in their own right. Review: Awesome book on the Seven Days - I’m still reading this book, can’t seem to put it down. Very informative and thought provoking . Review: Gentle, thorough treatment of a toxic subject for Christians - It seems to me that only John Lennox might be able to bridge the gaps between science, theology and logic, without offending everyone. It is a talent I do not possess. The very first chapter “But Does It Move” lays down the gauntlet for the YEC crowd. Sometimes we believers hold on so tightly to a literal interpretation of scripture that we miss the big picture. JL continues with a thorough analysis of the Bible’s description of creation and challenges our presuppositions over and over again. But he does it in such a kind and gentle way that you will stay with him until the end. I totally agree with him on his criticism of “Theistic Evolution “. It is a theory that creates more challenges than it solves. (I do not share his positive opinion of Francis Collins). JL refers to one of his other books “Cosmic Chemistry” often in this book. It is on my to read list. Hugh Ross’ book “Navigating Genesis …” is also an excellent book that I highly recommend. HR approaches this subject differently and you will not be getting a total repeat of the same arguments.

Gentle, thorough treatment of a toxic subject for Christians

7 “days” to create the world
The author is a well know scientist belonging to the exact sciences domain, and usually approaches Bible subjects carefully and rigorously. The book exposes different views on the word’s creation in 7 days. Using a language understandable by any one, challenges the regular simplistic interpretations and, using logic and, some times common sense reasoning, guides the reader through the many possible paths of thought. Don’t expect THE explanation, but something to think about and a solid base for further development in the subject.

Lennox a great thinker and mind in our generation
Lennox is a great writer and thinker! He uses logic and scripture together! Most of all, he uses the Hebrew text to clarify the topic which is why I used the term logic! A heat read, starting 2084 and the AI revolution!

Lennox nails it
John is eloquent. His walking out his faith while wholeheartedly exploring the actual evidence is a rare trait in current thinkers.

Clear, concise, conservative
A good primer book on the creation story from the Bible. It is clear and provides you with good information to be able to discuss the topic logically with others. No matter your bent regarding creation you will find that the book gives clear thoughts on both sides of the issue, although it is based on a 7 day Creationist viewpoint.

Well Reasoned and Very Fair Examination of the Origins Of Life
Well reasoned and very fair examination of the origins of life and what Genesis actually says, as opposed to what people wish it to say. Lots of information (with footnotes and meaningful quotes) to think about and examine. I am going to have to read the book again to gain even more insight. This book made me think for myself and ask questions that I had never even knew to ask. Well worth your time.

This is one of the best book I've ever read. I even lent my grandfather, who is a pastor, to read. Thank you, Professor.

Great book
Having long given up on the theory of evolution seeing how little sense it makes sense, the account in Genesis is majestic. How we read it may vary but this book helps dissolve some of the unnecessary and plain foolish arguments. Dr Lennox is a great communicator and the book like his You Tube interviews very enjoyable. Good science and good religion work in harmony only bigots on either side have issues. Alas life is full of mystery and that is just how it is. Read the book.

Well worth reading.
Excellent read. Well thought out. Well written. Lennox is brilliant. It is a bit harder of a read, for me, but certainly worth working it through.
