Q: Is this safe to use in a fireplace firebox?

Greetings from Color Rare. Assuming you are looking to tint/paint a firebox, pigments on their own will not adhere and must be added to a binder approved for this use (ex sealer, paint, …) and compatible with the firebox's material (wood, metal,...) The pigments themselves are non toxic and harmless as long as stipulated safety recommendations are followed when manipulating (inhaling of dust, ...)

Q: Will this work on tile and is it safe for counters?

Greetings from Color Rare! Are you looking to use the black iron oxide pigment to (A) fabricate colored tiles or (B) tint existing tiles? For scenario A, you can add up to 10 percent volume of pigment to your mixture. For case B, are the tiles porous (ie terra cotta) or non-porous? For porous tiles, the pigment may be added directly to penetrating stains. For non porous tiles, the pigment may be added directly to a varnish or resin intended for countertop use. Greetings from Color Rare! The amount you can color will depend on the desired tint (pale or dark) and the volume of product you want to color. We recommend using a maximum 10% pigment per volume. If coloring “in the mass”, suggested ratio is 10 kilos of oxide pigment per m3. Based on an approximate volume of 400,000 cm3 (assuming 1 cm thickness), you would require approximately 4 kilos of oxide pigment. You can also use pigments by sprinkling them (preferably on wet surface) and/or mixing them with water to create your desired effect/pattern on the surface. This will require less pigment than coloring “in the mass”. A sealer must be used as protective coat.
