these foams almost never get bad or clogged. But I used the shape to cut out a ton of finer media that you can order in bulk. the filter is not silent, but its not loud either. works well! Hint I use 2 grades of bulk filter from large to fine withing the filter box, keeps it all really clean and I change filters about 1 time a week per the indicator.
