GREAT JOB FOR RECORDING OR PLAYBACK!
It does a fine job of recording from cd to flash drive, clear sound. Cassette to flash drive, not so well, produces a lot of background noise. More so in personal tapes than commercial ones. No background noise when just playing cassettes, only when recording to flash drive, but not bad enough to mess up recordings. Instructions could be clearer. Trial and error to get recordings done. Just remember to press the record button twice to start recording from cd, once from cassette. Remote is handy. Can take thumb drive and burn cd on computer. Convenient! Good playback sound for a portable, has xbass option. Update: Just received 2nd unit for my wife. Clear sound with mellow sound!

So far, so good!
Have been using it for about a month and am happy thus far. Sound from CDs is remarkably good for something this unsophisticated. Operation is straightforward. Radio reception in my area is horrible, but this unit is as good or better than anything else I’ve tried at bringing in the one or two stations I can sort of get. Haven’t tried recording to USB from CD yet; will update if I encounter any problems.Only real complaint—and it’s not worth removing a star—was about the remote control. First, it wasn’t included. The company quickly sent me one when I tracked down their contact info, which was nice. But I am tired of products that require me to take time to contact Customer Service to ask for things that were supposed to be included. As a dinosaur, I long for the days when products almost never arrived with missing/broken/wrong parts.Second, as other reviewers have noted, the remote does not include volume controls—not even a Mute button. The lack of the Mute button is puzzling, since I’m guessing that as many or more people want to be able to quickly shut off sound as want to select/skip tracks. If I lived in a bigger apartment or worked from home, this deficit might lead me to remove a star. But since I don’t, and I need the exercise, I can live with telling the person on the phone to wait while I go turn down the music. If you need a basic boombox with a small footprint, this is a good purchase.

Great features
Great features for a very affordable price.Especially tape and cd conversion to MP3.High end sound is not expected but for the size and price it is good when using the bass boost.

Cheap, inferior materials and design. Third-party switcheroo?
Hamiltonbuhl boombox 5050 is almost too small to permit user to manipulate its features. The materials are cheaply manufactured, hinting at being prone to easy breakage. The unit shipped by third party had, obviously, been shipped to prior buyer and then returned - but not labeled as used. That observation probably explains the fact cassette player was inoperative. Radio and CD player functioned with acceptable quality of sound, but remote control is a total joke - barely beyond a "toy model." Returned item immediately and won't try a replacement!

While it lasted, good for moderate quality 'oldschool' transfers of cassette mixtapes i made in the 80's
Initially LOVED this unit!!! Allowed me to copy both my old cassette tapes and CD's to a flashdrive to download digital format to computer! A bit of a 'learning curve' learning operations as instruction manual is a bit vague. Those were the 'Pros'. The "Cons' are as follows: This is a great product design on paper, but the actual quality of this unit is pretty crappy. The construction is cheap and 'plasticky'. At first it copied both CD's and cassette tapes fine--but after only 2 months of use the unit started to deteriorate! Sound reproduction quality went from average to very bad--then the CD player begin skipping/distorting tracks. Next, the tape player crapped out--playing cassettes slower and slower like the motor was burning out. I currently am trying to investigate the warranty/replacement options for this. Don't know if I just was unlucky and got a 'lemon', or if all of these units are just bad quality. This unit is 'Disposable', not a permanent piece of audio equipment. Not good for heavy use--only good for limited and occasional light digital music transfers.

Worth the money
I am in an apartment and the sound carries thoughout the entire area. The device is small and compact which is what I needed. I really like being able to plug in a jump drive directly and have it play on random that is actually randomized and not playing one song 10 times. The cassette player portion has been working well as has the cd player which I have successfully programmed to repeat. The only part that concerns me is when a cd is playing the entire boombox vibrates. The movement is even for the device so it does not seem to be unbalanced; just a lot of power for the small device. I have also had success connecting an mp3 player via the aux. I have not used the remote as I keep forgetting to get a battery.Overall I am very pleased with this boombox. As an added plus, the screen lights up blue.

Not worth the price.
A bit expensive for the type of glitches it has. Continual play does not work well. Remote does not have a volume button. Other than that It's ok.
