A Compilation of American Legends from the Wild West
Once again, Captivating History have produced an excellent compilation of books on the lives and times of famous American heroes from the Wild West. Each individual book concentrates on a specific character such as Geronomo, Jesse James etc and allows the reader to get to know the character in detail. Each story is engaging and captivating in itself but combined together provide a perfect package to familiarise the reader with the full picture of these American legends.

I love Captivating History books! They are always well-written and very interesting. They provide enough info but not too much that drags the book down. This book is no different.

Ok, there does seem to be some good and some bad all hovering around the same topic of discussion. The problems are dealing with subject topic, length, and accuracy. For a second let’s deal with the first. I both love that he chose the matter of what he chose. Those are not necessarily who I think of first when I think of the Old West. On the other hand, he did skip a lot about who actually encompasses the west. It is both yay and nay thing that could’ve been dealt with only through being more exhaustive. Length is nice and short, not expecting you to dedicate too much of your time to follow every bunny trail of history that exists out there. Again on length. I can’t believe he skipped so many factual bits of essential history. Everywhere he includes a quip or factoid he also leaves one out. Just another problem with trying the subject absolutely attainable vs that which leads the subject from knowing what really happened. Last, accuracy. Matt is stuck with dealing with a bunch of water cooler historians ready to pick out when he missteps and says something wrong. I at times can be no different. It just bugs me wild when I hear an off fact like so and so became wanted for a crime in New Mexico when it really meant Arizona. Small fact yes, but it changes quite a world in the late 19th century. I won’t say who that one was about of curteousy, but I will say that later on in the book he doubles back and corrects himself on it. So good on that one. On the flipside, like magic he comes up with a number of facts that aren’t common and yet are true. It just makes every story one worth digging through. I guess the main theme above all is just ambivalence. For every good there is a bad and vice versa. I would hate to leave you with thinking I looked down on this work. I am just your typical lover of the Old West and that in and of itself leaves more for scrutiny. Overall I give it a 4 out of 5. Not too shabby.

The author has written an excellent book on what had transpired in the days when the Old Wild West and its colorful characters lived.

This is an excellent history of real life western figures. I learned a great deal about historical people who have inspired my imagination for years. Some I wished would have been more detailed but in general this book was really very good.
