Mystic River

I almost missed this when collecting great Hollywood movies (1940-present). Mystic River- Directed by Clint Eastwood, and starring Kevin Bacon, Tim Robbins (OSCAR), Sean Penn (OSCAR), Laura Linney, Marsha Gay Harden- this movie revolves around the murder of Penn's daughter- (Emmy Rossum)- and tension filled atmosphere surrounding the capture of her killer. All acting is superb- and a sure contender for Best Picture. When it comes to directing, Eastwood is underrated.

Sean Penn's acting in this film left me almost tearful with how raw the emotion was in one particularly, devastating scene. (I won't spoil it for you, but it felt so real, as a parent). The suspense and back story are excellent and keep you engaged throughout. I enjoyed the accents of the various characters, as well. I have watched this film multiple times over the years and highly recommend it.

From the music, to the cinematography, the acting, the editing, the writing; this movie was so well executed. This movie just grips you the whole way through and never lets you go until the credits roll. This is EASILY my FAVORITE Clint Eastwood directed film. Great acting on behalf of Sean Penn, Tim Robbins and Marcia Gay Harden. I love all the themes explored in this film, it was simply excellent work on behalf of ALL parties involved, with the great direction of Clint Eastwood. This is a slow thrilling crime dram, don't expect action or super high energy. This film is meant to be digested at the pace that it was completed.

Mystic River does not deserve the negative reviews leveled against it; while I respect the views expressed by others, I'd like to address the grounds often used to criticize this unpretentious and disturbing film:1.) For those who say it's "boring and slow": Don't we have enough films that presume a 2-second attention span on the part of the audience? The psychological content of the story demands careful development, and Eastwood constructs each scene with careful attention to details, always establishing an undercurrent--a suspenseful sense of the unknown. In an age where most films strive for gimmicky plot twists with Matrix-like special effects and camera angles, Eastwood returns us to the essence of any great film: a good screenplay, remarkable perfromances, and direction that doesn't interfere with the story.2.) For those who say it's "predictable": The focus of this story is on the psychology of the characters; the plot twists may be predictable in some cases, but this in no way detracts from the depth of the intended themes. A story cannot rely on plot alone for it to be memorable; in fact, most plots since Shakespeare are fairly formulaic. People, however, never complain that they knew Hamlet was going to die--the art is in the substance. Mystic River gives us plenty to deal with. The tensions and nuances established by the characters are at the heart of this film, not its plot structure, however predictable some might deem it to be.3.) For those who say that the "characters have no redeeming qualities": I don't want a film filled with "redeemable" characters, whatever that means. I want a story that rings true; the characters don't have to be heroes--they have to be human, and this film delivers. No one is flawless or free of peculiar and sometimes disturbing characteristics. If we're reluctant to consider the darker aspects of ourselves, that's another matter, but as the film shows, people are too complex to be categorized neatly under the "redeemable" heading.4.) For those who criticize the musical score: Some say, "I'm a musician, and Eastwood shouldn't compose because he only uses four notes repetitively." Well, I'm a musician, too (self-taught and trained), and in this case, it hardly matters what credentials a musician has, really, or how many notes he uses. Eastwood's score is unassuming, and it does what it has to--complement the scenes without being bombastic. Who needs massive orchestration and complexity if it's uncalled for? The score doesn't distract us from the acting and the story, and I'm glad for that. As to Eastwood's status as a composer, that is also irrelevant since history is filled with musicians "without training" who have made their personalities felt. Eastwood had the courage to do it himself, and it's refreshingly free of pretense. I'm sure he doesn't think of himself as the next John Williams, and if he could do it himself, why not?Overall, it's a movie worthy of our attention for its stark honesty. This is one you can talk about and interpret--complete enough to pose the darkest questions, and wise enough to let each viewer search for the answers.

I rented this about a month ago. I had forgotten what a great film it was. Great for a weekend escape from reality! Highly recommend. But it’s not for kids!

Very, very good movie. Excellent cast, screen play and music!

I seen this movie in the theaters when it was new. I wanted to rewatch it there were some things that I couldn’t remember from the film. It certainly is worth watching twice. Sean Penn earned his Oscar. As did Tim Robbins. Clint Eastwood has a way of bringing out the very best in the characters he directs. The movie is disturbing. But it is a great movie regardless

Mit Mystic River ist dem Regisseur Clint Eastwood einer seiner wohl besten Regiearbeiten gelungen.Der Film erzählt die Geschichte von einer Clique, die ein grausames Schicksal durchlebt und so wird einer der Jungs von einem Mann entführt und offensichtlich misshandelt.Jahre später – der Junge konnte inzwischen schon längst fliehen – ereignet sich ein Mordfall und einer der mittlerweile erwachsenen Jungs arbeitet bei der Polizei und ist dabei den Fall zu lösen aber es stehen viele Fragen offen und viele Verdächtige werden getroffen bis es am Ende zur allesentscheidenden Auflösung kommt.Eastwood hat diesen Film jedenfalls grandios in Szene gesetzt und es ist weniger ein Streifen, der durch seine auch sehenswerte Kameraarbeit und seine Musik überzeugt, sondern durch seine Erzählung und seine überaus überzeugenden Darstellungen. Wobei Sean Penn und Tim Robbins hier gesondert zu erwähnen wären. Penn, der eher den harten Mann gibt überzeugt mit reduzierter Miene somit genauso wie Robbins, der einen Mann spielt, der die Wunden der Vergangenheit noch immer nicht verarbeitet haben zu scheint. Und so hat vor allem Robbins starke Momente und Szenen.Fazit: Spannend, entwicklungsreich und somit absolut sehenswert.

Die drei Jungs Jimmy (Jason Kelly), Sean (Connor Paolo) und Dave (Cameron Bowen) wachsen als Freunde zusammen in Boston auf. Nachdem sie ihre Namen in frischen Gehweg-Beton geschrieben haben, werden sie von einem Mann angesprochen, der sich als Polizist ausgibt. Er nimmt Dave im Auto mit. Der Mann entpuppt sich als Kinderschänder, Dave wird vier Tage lang eingesperrt und vergewaltigt, ehe er entkommen kann. Mehrere Jahrzehnte später haben sich die Freunde von damals auseinandergelebt und völlig unterschiedliche Wege eingeschlagen. Jimmy (Sean Penn) ist ein ehemaliger Gangster, der schon mehrere Jahre im Gefängnis gesessen hat. Sean (Kevin Bacon) ist bei der Bostoner Polizei, Dave (Tim Robbins) führt ein scheinbar normales Leben, ist aber immer noch traumatisiert von den Erlebnissen, die er als Kind durchmachen musste. Eines Tages wird die 19-jährige Tochter von Jimmy, Katie (Emmy Rossum), ermordet aufgefunden - und ausgerechnet Dave gerät mit der Zeit unter Tatverdacht...Mystic River ist ein im Jahr 2003 erschienener Film von Regisseur Clint Eastwood, die Vorlage lieferte ein Roman von Dennis Lehane. Die Mischung aus Drama, Thriller und Krimi funktioniert: Bis zum Ende lässt sich nicht wirklich erahnen, was während der Mordnacht passiert ist. Als Zuschauer ist man stets nah dran an den Hauptfiguren, die übrigens hervorragend gespielt werden. Mystic River ist auf angenehme Weise erwachsen. Das hier ist kein bildgewaltiges Popcorn-Kino, sondern eine ohne große Effekte erzählte Geschichte - und zwar eine richtig gut erzählte. Für mich zählt dieser Film zu Eastwoods besten, neben Million Dollar Baby (2004), Letters From Iwo Jima (2006) und Gran Torino (2008). Das Bild der Blu-ray geht in Ordnung, ein paar Extras gibt's auch.

Film cupo, anche nella fotografia, che racconta le tragedie di uomini fragili e indifesi, anche quando si atteggiano a forti; vengono affrontati temi quali la perdita dell'innocenza, la supremazia maschile con coercizione alla violenza, l'impossibilità di liberarsi del passato, il dominio del fato come nella tragedia greca. Regia ed attori straordinari. Film imperdibile.

Ein super Thriller, auch wenn er inzwischen ein paar Jahre auf dem Buckel hat. Tim Robbins und Sean penn spielen fantastisch, die Story ist spannend bis zur letzten Minute. Das Blatt wendet sich auch erst recht spät und kommt unerwartet. Die ganze Zeit liegt ein melancholischer Schleier über dem Film. Ganz großes Kino, wirklich sehenswert!
