What is left is a spring loaded one way check valve that is there to keep you from sucking tub water back into your water system if the shower head is left submerged in the bath water. I don't know if the check is removable and did not try, it should be left in. The magnetic head has a black washer with integrated mesh screen, which I was able to remove, my water does not have any sediment that I know of. These mods made a huge difference and the spray is a lot more powerful. **Q: Is there a restrictor that can be removed?** A: After taking out the white and black ring, I used a tiny screw driver to basically pop the plastic “spokes” in the first restrictor. Once I broke enough of them, it came out easily. The remaining restrictors just fell out. Makes night and day difference in the shower head pressure. **Q: Would a 4" shower arm (pipe coming out of the wall) be adequate or does it need to be 6"?** A: Yes! I have 4" shower arms in both my baths that were installed during a total house repipe, so I'm assuming that's what is being installed nowadays. The only shower that compares, is to a sun shower, while camping. It used gravity to create a soft rain-like shower… that is what this shower head has. The setting I like is the ‘Wide Coverage.’ The ‘Downpour’ setting is okay, but it has a pulsating bit in the middle. The ‘Rinse,’ ‘Massage,’ ‘Relaxing Massage’ and the ‘Soothing Massage’ settings are all too much for me. I don’t want an invigorating shower, I want a gentle shower, and I am absolutely delighted that this shower head provides it. That brings us to the 4 Star review instead of a 5 Star review. Two things; it came in a molded ‘plastic’ insert and the fittings are also ‘plastic.’ There is enough plastic messing up our planet without using plastic fittings. As for the packaging, cardboard would have worked very well and the Moen Company could have touted their environmental stance. The install was so easy, that I was able to install it while waiting for a batch of bread to bake, before I tucked an apple pie in the oven! That’s less than 20 minutes to locate a pair of pliers, a soft cloth to put between the pliers and the plastic parts so as not to mar them, tuck in the washer and put plumbing tape on where shower head screws onto the pipe. It’s not the cheapest shower head on the market, but more often than not, you get what you pay for. This is a fabulous looking and performing shower head. And, it has a hand held feature that is perfect. The head connects to the bracket via a magnet.
