Blackberry Smoke
When I first heard of Blackberry Smoke, my impression was, another southern rock band like the other ones. Yes, Lynrd Skinnerd clones. I took a chance on this CD and decided to give them a close listen. It is pretty much southern/country rock, but I found Blackberry Smoke to be refreshing. Their songs contain substance. With good song writing skills and good lyrics they were quite fun to listen to. They do not take themselves too serious and I found some of the songs to be quite humorous, while the others seemed to strike a general chord that I believe we can all identify with on some level. "Shakin Hands with the Holy Ghost", "Sanctified Woman", and "Testify", I found amusing with the church references to describe a little hell raising and carousing, which are generally topics of the this genre. "Ain't Got the Blues" made laugh out loud with it's wit set to country blues music. Very Nice, indeed. "The Whipporwill" and "One Horse Town", I found touching with its sadness and sentiment. The idea of being stuck in a small town with no way out was kind of reminiscent of John Melloncamp's idea behind "Small Town", but with a bit more tragedy. My favortite song was "Pretty Little Lie", which plays out the theme of cheating and the love triangle, which may seem typical for country or southern rock, but the song is quite pretty and worth the time to listen. All of the songs I found follow some or most of these same themes. I like Blackberry Smoke and believe you will not feel it to be a waste of your time or money to give them a listen. I'm looking forward to a chance to see these guys live, if they ever make it to my town. I recommend this CD to lovers of music everywhere.

BLACKBERRY SMOKE - Leaves a Scar for sure. LIVE Concert CD with some short interviews and insight into who they are. LOVE IT!!!!
Awesome video of a great bunch of wonderfully talented TRUE Red Blooded American guys from the Deep South who would have been one of thegreat treasured bands of Southern / Country rock had they been born early enough to be around in the Southern Rock heyday of the 70s. This isa fine quality produced and filmed (great audio too) music video. If you like Southern Rock or just plain good old American homegrown music youwill love this video. After growing up and being lucky enough to experience and see "in concert" nearly every one of the rock bands now consideredclassic rock in the 70s, these guys are the ONLY new music I actually buy and support 100% I have put Blackberry Smoke CDs on or this DVD and just laid back and am instantly transported back to my late teens / early twenties as their music sounds like a mix of great old time country musicwith Allman Brothers, Marshal Tucker, Charlie Daniels and Atlanta Rhythm Section with some Lynyrd Skynyrd / Outlaws taste thrown in for good measure. Now this does NOT mean they are anything close to a cover band. These guys can write every damned good as they can play but from seeing them LIVE and listening to their music I know they had to grow up raised on Southern Rock. Absolute best newer band I have heard and seen since the 70s and they get better and better with time. GO SEE THEM AND SUPPORT THEM so they can keep our music alive and earn a living doing it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The spirit of old Skynyrd lives on!!
Yeah, I'm a big Skynyrd fan...of the OLD Skynyrd led by Ronnie Van Zant of yore! While the current incarnation of "Lynyrd Skynyrd" has seemed to have gradually lost their oomph since their album "Twenty" in 1997, the mojo possessed by Ronnie, Allen, Steve and Gary (he is thankfully still with us) has definitely been passed on to BS (I know, great acronym...lol)!! These guys churn out the catchiest, baddest ass southern-fried rock songs (with a touch more country flavor) you have heard in 40 years, believe me! :-) These guys are riff masters as well as thoughtful, poetic songwriters in the spirit of RVZ!The sound quality, song selection and performances are all TOP NOTCH on this live CD, and I echo another reviewer in that these performances even seem to outdo the studio performances! One aspect that makes this obvious is the addition of keyboardist Brandon Still's ivory tickling on songs from BS's Little Piece of Dixie album, which was recorded before he joined the band. Great contributions to those fantastic songs that are still great even without the keyboards on the original album! :-)For those of you who thought good ol southern rock was dead, lift up your heads and rejoice...Blackberry Smoke is carrying the torch and doesn't look to be letting go of it (or letting it burn out) anytime soon!

Southern Rock is alive and well...
This is one of those bands that you probably won't hear if you don't search out bands that still play the type of music you fell in love with in the glory days of the original Lynyrd Skynyrd. They're my kind of people. They're long-haired, talented, good ole boys that know how to have a good time, and play damn good music. They defy category in that they have a definite country flavor, but they have an attitude (and lyrics), that country radio would never touch. To quote one of their songs "I'm a dying breed of rock'n'roll left ass up in a ditch". Whatever you choose to call it, I just call it great music. A lot of today's country is more rock than what used to be considered Southern Rock. I have no use for categories. I just know what I like.Blackberry Smoke is an excellent band, and even more importantly, they're an excellent live band. I like a wide range of music from Waylon Jennings to Megadeth, and my taste usually leans toward hard rock and metal, but I'm Southern born and bred and I'll never get tired of the likes of Skynyrd, Blackfoot, Marshall Tucker, The Allman Bros, Charlie Daniels, and so on, etc., etc.Thank God for Blackberry Smoke to carry the torch!

Great concert...Charlie Starr should be world famous by now! These guys are very talented and put on a great show. Blackberry Smoke have instantly become one of my all time favorite bands...one listen is all it took. I've been buying every CD I can find since seeing them perform in concert on YouTube.
