Q: What is the reason for the 1" or so wide slit in the underside of the 3-way bracket? I see similar brackets without this slit.

When you put the 4x4 boards in the square metal brace opening with the slits it allows the metal braces to be squeezed on to the 4x4 boards when you screw them together for a more secure fit.

Q: What is the maximum length beam you can use?

I don't know the maximum but I am using 16 foot beams with no problem.

Q: Are they strong enough to add a porch swing to it?

Yes. I would feel safe installing a porch swing from our 4 x 4s installed between these brackets. The metal construction of these brackets is solid.

They fit a true 4x4 post. Not the standard US 4x4 which is 3.5x3.5”

Had to shim with washers to make work. Is meant for a true 4x4 not what we buy at the store…

The weld on these brackets is undersized

The picture of these brackets is deceiving. The photo looks like a decent sized weld but they are small and undersized. I’m a welder by trade so having good welds matters to me and was the reason I initially purchased the brackets over the others. After I bought these brackets, the price dropped $40 so I sent them back.
