2800 rpm at the first setting. This thing has tons of power/torque. It's loud. It devours mild steel in a hail of sparks.

Do you need an adapter to run 4.5 inch grinding discs (from, say, dewalt)?

No, most grinding wheels use the same arbor size which is 7/8", so just pay attention to that. Remember its not the spindle size but the arbor size.

Will the makita 5" dust extraction tuck point guard fit on this grinder?

Yes. I own it and it works great.

Will this be good for smoothing aluminum (welding/building up a gouge on a curbed wheel)? Certain wheel be better than others?

I'm guessing yes. The variable speed makes it easy to control. As I said, this is a guess as I use mine for stone sculpting.
