Cheap and easy, works well for karaoke
I've bought two of these audio extractors over the past few years and both are used for doing karaoke from iPads, bought the first one two years ago and another one last week.I'm using the Karafun and Stingray Karaoke iPad apps for karaoke and by using an official Apple MD826ZMA Lightning to HDMI Adapter, these apps allow you to run the karaoke song queue from the tablet while displaying the karaoke lyrics on the HDMI output port. The cheaper, non-official, adapters don't seem to work that well, and that's if they work at all (this is one area you want to stay in the official Apple family of products). This adapter works very well for KaraFun as you can look up songs, see lyrics, and maintain the queue while someone is singing from the big TV (note- while a iPad 4 works for playback, you need a more powerful iPad to do more at one time than play the lyrics on the large screen, something like an iPad Air 2 or better). The Stingray Karaoke iPad app works a little different, but you still end up with the karaoke lyrics on the big screen TV for the current singer (and is only $60 a year to access their entire library, though sign up from the website rather than the app so you can use the account on more than just the iPad!). BTW- between the 2 apps, you have almost 50,000 pro level karaoke songs at your finger tips!Ran into the problem that when you plug the mixer board into the earphone jack of the iPad with the HDMI adapter attached it will often times lose the audio or, worse yet, go out of sync with the lyrics! The solution was to pull the audio off the HDMI port coming out of the iPad, and this box is perfect for that! Not only is the video resolution supported by the box not a problem (the HDMI out is only in HD or lower), but the ability to switch to 2 channel audio means that we're only sending 2 audio channels (left & right) to the mixing board. So this is hooked up as follows: the Apple Lightning to HDMI Adapter is plugged into the iPad and a short HDMI cable connects between the HDMI "in" port of the Wiistar HDMI Audio Extractor and the HDMI port on the Apple adapter. Then the HDMI "out" port of the Audio Extractor is connected to a large screen TV (or a HDMI breakout box that sends the video to several TVs at once, as needed). The headphone jack of the Wiistar HDMI Audio Extractor is then plugged into the mixing board (with the switch on the Wiistar box set to 2 channels). Both the Apple adapter and the Audio Extractor run off USB for power, so I use a 2 port USB adapter with at least 2000mAh or better (though you can use individual USB power adapters if you wanted to, but with the dual port only one wall outlet is needed). Now, I haven't used these for the optical or coax output and have nothing to say about that, only the audio out from the headphone jack which has worked excellent for me.The downside for using this in other applications than with an iPad is that it only supports up to 1080 video and not 4K, so if you are looking at needing it for a 4K application (such as for an Amazon 4K Fire TV box), then you need to look at different audio extractor or content yourself to stick with 1080 HD max video.

It does work. Just takes a reboot of all electronics after setup.
I was going to leave this product a one star because it wasn't working. I didn't check the audio because it defeated the purpose. I wanted to give an honest review so I turned my projector back on to take a picture and test the audio. Low and behold, the video works and the audio works fine. My setup is Roku to hdmi to audio splitter to hdmi to hdmi/digital dvi adapter to projector! It works and I have insurance if it breaks. I power the splitter from the USB port on my Roku!

I would have rated this product five stars if it had come with a cable which worked properly. The box itself works great but I had to replace the USB to mini USB cable that it came with as it was not reliable and would cause the sound and video to periodically cut out. The box itself has been very reliable and the sound quality seems quite good. Considering that this is about half the price of most competitive options I would highly recommend it but be prepared to replace the cable that it comes with. Also be aware that you need a wall power brick (USB) as it does not come with one. I imagine most techy people have these lying around but just be aware that you will need to supply your own.I am using this to split the audio and video from a Wii U so that I can play on a projector and use external sound via an amp. Great gadget overall but it needs to come with a higher quality cable or none at all.

Worked as expected... for only 3 months.
UPDATE (4/26/17)This product was working perfectly for me, but it no longer works, of course, outside of the return window. Now, it's possible that I got a defective unit, but considering that all similar products are at least twice as expensive, I'm going to assume that these are just not made to last.ORIGINAL REVIEW (Jan 2017)I bought this when it had no reviews, but I figured that if it didn't work I could just return it, and if it did, I would have saved $10-20 compared to buying some of the other similar products I found on Amazon.Well, I'm happy to be able to leave a good review here! I bought this because I just got a Chromecast to plug into my projector, but my projector doesn't have audio output, so I was l stuck. I didn't want to have to spend another $25-30 just to get sound with my Chromecast, so when I found this one for much less, I gave it a try. I received it in two days with Prime, and immediately set it up. I plugged the Chromecast into the input hdmi, and then used a regular hdmi cable to connect this box to the projector. Then I used the aux jack to connect it to my speakers. I fired up the Chromecast, the projector, and the speakers, and played a video on YouTube. Success! The audio came through loud and clear, and the video was just as sharp as it was with the Chromecast plugged directly into the projector. Definitely 1080p.Finally, this only gets 4 stars from me because it isn't prefect. First of all, it comes with the usb cable for power, but no charging brick. For me that wasn't a huge issue because I had an extra one sitting in a box, but be aware that you will need a wall plug to power this. And second, when there was no sound actively playing, the speakers had a low frequency buzz. Nothing too out of the ordinary, and it didn't affect the audio quality, but it was annoying nonetheless. The last thing to be aware of that is common among similar products (from what I've read of their reviews anyway), is that there is an LED indicator light that is on constantly, and it's pretty bright. It hasn't bothered me, but your setup may make it more of an issue for you.tl;dr: It works well with no loss of video or audio quality.

Easiestway to give a JVC KaBoom HDMI sound
The media could not be loaded. Â Works excellent for older analog input 2CH stereo devices where the TV doesn't provide analog output, works with Chromecast. Note, 2x HDMI cords required separately. HDMI audio output from device to TV not impacted (this device essentially sits transparent, so audio can be simultaneously heard on the TV/AVR and analog output). Optical output from splitter untested (my use case does not require it).
