How does this axe compare to the gb small splitting axe? or other sweedish style splitting axes (husqvarna)?

This would be a German splitting head design, compared to a Swedish design. The German wedge shape will be wider, and using the tool your blade should not have as much risk of getting pinched or stuck as it would with a slimmer wedge, like the husqvarna. You will also have an easier time freeing this axe if it does become stuck as well. This is a very effective compact little splitter, and is excellent for things like campfires or smaller wood stoves.

Is the head on the Rheinland pack axe any larger/different the Rheinland hatchet, or is it simply a longer handle?

Hello Bill,The primary difference between the blades is that the Rheinland Pack Axe has a 1.5 lb head, and the Hatchet has a 1.25 lb head. So, yes, it is a larger head. Other than that, the blades are very similar dimensio-to-scale wise, other than a few minute differences to make up for the weight difference.
