Even if you're not a linguist I recommend buying this book because it helps you understanding how this wonderful language works, thus improving your skills

I cannot recommend this book enough. For the Japanese learners who get through years of learning or those who still get confused because the Japanese language still doesn't make sense to them, it is much better if you read this book. It will organize the language system and made sense of it. It is full of grammar notes and sentences' examples that help understanding the way Japanese people speak and write. You might just need to know​ some of the linguistics basics beforehand to read it smoothly.
