Does this need to be soaked before placing in tank

Yes, I would recommend soaking the wood for several days if not weeks. Soaking it before placing in tank insures it won't float but more importantly helps release the tannins in the wood. Not harmful to most fish but your tank water will look like tea until it's completely leached out. I soak all my drift wood for 2 weeks (outside in a cooler) AND boil in water for several hours. This releases most all of tannins and kills any critters or bacterial hiding in the wood.
