"Progress" isn't progress if your not getting closer to where you want to be!
Ray' Arithmetic is tried and true. It approaches math instruct from a linear perspective, adding precept upon precept, line upon line, here a little, there a little; presenting first the concrete, followed by the pictorial, and finally the abstract. Ray' understood math which is a language, as well as having a language, must be learned as any language is learned -- first, one hears; second, one speaks (repeats/memorizes); third, one reads; and, lastly, one writes. Most modern instruction has reversed the process, relying too heavily on repetition provided in the form of worksheet drills (an abstract approach).

You really need this
book the help understand Ray's math, unless of course you are very good at math. I am not good at math but I seem to think my children should be and therefore I think they can do more then they do in a lesson. This book gives you a very clear idea of how to do Ray's and how to break it down into daily components. There are suggestions for math games at the end of the book which has been fun.I have had the other Ray's math books for years but I didn't know how to use them really. The parent teacher guide has shined a light for me so that we are now "using" Ray's instead using them as bookends.

As a new-ish home school Mom I find this book very helpful in building my confidence as a teacher. It's step by step progression and yet learn at the childs own pace too. I really like the emphasis on making sure the student knows the material before moving on as opposed to a schedule based system where you feel obligated to stick to the curriculum lest you have some left over at the end of the year and have ended up losing $ on the part of the curriculum that doesn't get used. I know that it's not the same for everyone but that is what I'm finding that we prefer. Love it!

Wondergul guide!
I was at a complete loss on how to use the Ray's Airthmetic series and this guide helped a lot. It breaks down was lessons to use for each week and how to present them. If a child needs more help in an area or is more advanced it offers a second route you can take to adjust to your child's need. It also offers comprehension check and tests for the end of each unit as well as games and projects in the back you can incorporate.

So practical
I liked Ray's Arithmetic but wasn't confident I was using it well for my son. Ms. Beechick quickly teaches about how children learn math, then clearly tells you how to use Ray's to teach in the most effective way. She lays out a sample schedule to teach the whole series in 8 years. She even provides tests, evaluation charts, and games and projects to help your children learn. I am so glad I bought this book!

Little dated
It's cool, but there are so so many modern and updated teaching tools.
