Q: Do I need to take the card out of the holder to open / start the car?

Yes you do. I can't open the door with it inside at all. I didn't bother to try starting the car.

Q: I’ve just received mine, the material didn’t seem to be genuine carbon fiber. Did I receive the wrong item or was there something on the surface?

It is NOT carbon fiber. Mine just came apart. A thin clear laminate with the “carbon fiber” pattern peeled off of a smooth black plastic underlayer.
