I bought the black ones. They are matte.

I have the black cubes and they are matte

Q: Is there enough surface area on the back to mount using command adhesive?

Yes, I believe so - back has about 50% surface area - bottom half of back is open, top half has 2 keyhole style mounts. Depending on weight, a good adhesive would hold.
