Rain chains themselves are generally for the purpose of a decorative replacement for a gutter downspout. **Q: What size hole do you need to cut for installation?** A: I did not have to cut anything as I had an existing down spout. I removed the downspout and placed this in the hole. **Q: Why does it come with two plates?** A: Different sized gutter openings. One is the collar looking plate and the other is more of a hanger that sits in the gutter and comes out the spout. **Q: How big does the hole have to be? dimensions don't state od or id.** A: About 2 1/4”. It comes with a reinforcing plate the exact size so you can oversized the hole you make in the gutter and that way it easily fits in.
