The fingers are spring steel about a 1/10 of an inch wide and heavy duty enough to not flex outward at all. In some cases this may be what you need but I more or less expected spring steel wires. The mechanism will not work well under tight bends and sufficient force to open the fingers for full open release requires effort. This almost caused a failure for my use, which was to blindly replace a failed rivet deep in a leather knife sheath. The fingers are so weak and flimsy that it is a struggle to even remove a pickle from a jar with it. Although not what it was made for, I got it for removing nuts & bolts from a can in my workshop as it is about the perfect length for this.
