I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend to understand why there is so much gun violence in the U.S. It is extremely well researched and informative. The author has answered my question about about violence in America from a cultural perspective. That said, it is a very tedious read. It's written by an academic and reads like a 500+ page textbook.

Foundational to understanding violence in America today
While searching for resources to help me understand the roots of the high violence level, relevant to other developed countries, I came upon Slotkin's three volumes that provide significant insight into how we arrived where we are.

Regeneration Through Violence
This is a scholarly book giving a new facet with which to view the development of the "American" persona/myth.In it the wilderness acts as a being, dark, dangerous, free...as an external reality and a developer of inward convictions.Very enjoyable.
