British director James Watkinss directorial debut is an overtly moralistic thriller centering around a couple who are trapped and taunted lakeside by a gang of teenage bullies, led by a boy named Brett (Jack OConnell). Warning signs to stay out of this camping area abound, in the spirit of myriad camping-trip-gone-awry tales, like the classic Friday the 13th . The challenge, here, is to subvert those warning signs in order to harness some minor sympathy for the alleged victims to be. However, Steve (Michael Fassbender) and Jenny (Kelly Reilly) are too wrapped up in puppy love to turn around, even when their GPS signal advises them to do so. As a gang of wayward kids pick fights with Steve and Kelly, the couple attempts escape... at first. But Steves desire for revenge impels him to search for the delinquents parents, which becomes the couples downfall. A good portion of Eden Lake is devoted to the chase, during which Steve and Kelly look increasingly swampy under caked on layers of blood and mud. These scenes are well done, fast-paced, and here, enacting fear, Kelly Reilly is at her best. But as the film progresses, one sees so many connections between the teens violence and the abhorrent behavior of their parents, that Eden Lake leaves no character interpretation up to the viewer. Yes, bad parents usually make bad teens. But a deeper investigation into Bretts inner mind, or his ability to follow through with torture and the sadistic control he exhibits over his gang, would result in less obvious, and possibly more interesting explanations for criminal action. Though many Dimension Extreme films are cutting edge in the horror genre (see Inside ), Eden Lake is not one of them. -- Trinie Dalton Like a bad dream turned worst nightmare, Eden Lake is a "relentlessly tense and immaculately paced" (Twitch Film) horror-thriller about modern youth gone wild. When a young couple goes to a remote wooded lake for a romantic getaway, their quiet weekend is shattered by an aggressive group of local kids. Rowdiness quickly turns to rage as the teens terrorize the couple in unimaginable ways, and a weekend outing becomes a bloody battle for survival. Quite brutal & effective. Enter at your own risk!
Jenny (Kelly Reilly) and Steve (Michael Fassbender) are a British couple, looking for a romantic weekend getaway close to nature. They have arrived at idyllic Eden Lake, pretty much out in the middle of nowhere, and they set up camp. These are successful people, and when a group of noisy teens shows up to break their quiet time, Steve in particular has no problem asking them to “keep it down.” And it is deeply predictable (since you know you’re watching a slasher movie) that this particular group of teens isn’t going to take this very well. But the level of hell that ensures is beyond anything you might have reasonably expected. I was vaguely aware that this film was supposed to be quite brutal and so had sort of skirted seeing it for some years. But I think perhaps the emergence of YELLOWSTONE and the (deserved) fame of Kelly Reilly finally forced me to give it a look. The film features not only pre-stardom Reilly & Fassbender, but a younger Jack O’Connell. They, along with everyone else, are excellent. I’m sure that top-level acting helps propel this film along, but it’s also extremely well-edited and very single-minded of purpose. I really don’t want to spoil a whole lot, but let’s just say that we get to see several unpleasant deaths, lots of nail-biting escapes and just generally bathe ourselves in unrelenting tension for over an hour. The film is deeply bleak. It has, I dare say, no redeeming qualities. Yet, it lives up to the reason for horror movies on a very basic level. One, to put the viewer through terrific tension so they can have the terrific release at the end of saying “it was all just a movie.” Two, it holds a mirror up to some kind of societal truth…in this case, a very specific look at disaffected youth, who see how little hope their parents have and how little hope they have themselves. And thus, they seeth with resentments, and these are easily turned on the young couple who have had the nerve to intrude on their space and ask for some privacy and quiet. While the events that ensue are extreme examples, I think we can all recognize how little moments can spark big consequences. But, back to Reilly. While the rest of the cast is very solid, Reilly steals the show. Her performance throughout is one of naturalistic simplicity and clarity, and she readily takes us along on her harrowing journey. I can’t exactly recommend the film, because it is so brutish and brutal and bloody and exploitative. But it is finely crafted and if you’re up for being put through a ringer, it is a movie-going experience as effective as any you could want. Deeply effective.

Wow, all bets are off
This is one of the better films i have seen in a long time. Eden Lake, tells the strory of a young couple out for a romantic camping trip when they are suddenly crossed by a young group of the most annoying bratty little punks I think i have ever seen on screen. It starts off as basic disrespect a fight oiler beach space and very basic quests for the children to be polite and allow our couple the weekend they were expecting, but to these kids they will have none of that, and when the banter causes the death of one of the kids dogs all bets are off. In an amazing trick, the filmmakers use, you will forget these are kids but then just as something happens you are reminded that there just lost kids and you almost feel for them but that is quickly snatched away by another even worse deed by them. Neither side is right in this film, our couple make mistakes as well as the kids which add to the realness of the film. All i know is i haven't watched a dvd in recent years that i talked back to the screen as much as this film, you want to jump in and help; and oddly at different times either sides. The last bit of the film is kinda… a little obvious and lacked the impact i am sure they intended, the whole "the apple dosnt fall far from the tree etc.." but i understand why it was necessary . All in all i give this a high review, if you like suspense good solid acting and film work this is your film. You will not shake this one off that quickly.

Really good movie! Great ending, you will not believe it after everything she went through...
I was very surprised from the quality of this movie. The plot and acting (Michael Fassbender and Kelly Reilly) are outstanding. Very well done. You will not see the time go by... The movie starts with the planning of a nice week-end by a couple who plans to get married. You know that something bad is going to happen to them but don't know how and why. And then we slowly understand when we see the white trash, trailer park people who are living in the village next to Eden Lake. Bad parents are usually the reason the kids are bad. A simple, reasonable move would be to just say no, leave the place after the first threat. Teaches us a lesson that sometimes, we have to keep it low and pick up a useful fight to fight. Don't fight all the fights that are in front of you. Chose the one that you have a chance to win! Be smart, don't think you are a coward if you decide to move on. Let the beach to the hooligans who are trashing it. Move on to the other side of the Lake! Have fun...But no, you decide to confront the hooligans, the people who have nothing else to do in their life all week long but beating their kids and just live to get drunk on the weekends! Don't expect a fun ride, you will be exhausted at the end of the movie. This is not a movie for people who are trying to save the world. This is a movie for "Dirty Harry" lovers. The ending is totally unexpected!

A Viciously Realistic Thriller
The first time I saw Eden Lake was on cable. I caught the opening scenes, pastoral goings-on with a couple out for a drive, suddenly over their heads in an escalating cascade of ever more horrific yet realistic violence, and I couldn't even sit down. I stood the whole movie, until 3 AM. Now thanks to Amazon I have my own copy. The director comments that in test viewings, he saw viewers leaving the theater with ashen faces. He said, 'I've done my job'. You can turn the wrong corner in your car, on your bike, while out hiking in the woods, anyone can do it, and be so far into trouble you cannot get out of it. There comes a time in the lives of the unfortunate among us when they realize that despite all the times they've scraped their way out of bad situations, this time nothing is going to work. The directing, photography, sound, editing, acting, casting, writing, pacing - every thing about this movie is perfect. When it hurts on screen, you jump in your seat and grab the spot, you are so into the scene. Give the kids to Grandma and Grandpa. Take the battery out of your cell phone, pull the phone line from the wall, turn off your computer, put a sign on the door "On Vacation, Back Next Week", and power this up. Alone. If you dare. Or with that special someone, if you like having them scream and jump into your arms.

An extremely disturbing viewing experience
!!!WARNING.CONTAINS SPOILERS!!! This horror/thriller invoked very powerful emotions in me. It concerns a young couple Jenny and Steve(Kelly Reilly and Michael Fassbinder) who go for a weekend break and whilst visiting a local beauty spot, Eden Lake, get into a confrontation with a gang of teenagers. What starts as a seemingly minor arguement soon escalates into a series of increasingly violent episodes. Soon the couple are desperately trying to escape from the woods surrounding the lake, playing a deadly game of cat and mouse with the gang, led by the psychotic Brett(James O'Connell). This film certainly provokes debate and raises questions about its motivations. To what extent is it exploiting the fears in the viewer, regarding the current spate of violence in the country, and does it, in that case, also pander to these fears. Another question I was asking myself was regarding the brutal, shocking violence during the latter part of the film. Was it necessary, or does the violence on screen dehumanise the viewer as well as the characters on screen. Watching the interview, and question and answer session with director answered most of my worries. I certainly wasn't entertained by the escalating violence, just deeply shocked. Surely films that glamourise violence are the dangerous ones. There are a couple of scenes that do try to explain the motivations of Brett's character. There is a suggestion that he has been in prison, and also that he has been brutalised by the treatment by his father. The fact that the accidental death of his dog is the trigger for Brett to go completely over the edge, suggests that he has lost the only thing he has ever truely loved. Whilst the motivations of the other gang members arent explored in depth(although it is clear that peer pressure from their psychotic leader is a big factor), as the director has rightly pointed out, he was making a horror film, not a social realist drama. Anyway, please buy this film, as it is a very powerful, important piece of work. If this film really is a reflection of society, then we are all in big trouble. 5 out of 5. There is a large array of extras on this DVD. I would recommend watching the interview with the director, as it may answer any questions or problems you may have with the content of the film.

Gracias.
