IF YOU'VE EVER BEEN TO A ROCK CONCERT, CHANCES ARE THAT ALL THE FLASHING AND MOVING LIGHTS THERE WERE CONTROLLED THROUGH THE DMX PROTOCOL. DMX IS THE INDUSTRY STANDARD FOR CONTROLLING STAGE LIGHTING, AND IS NOW INCREASINGLY USED ALSO IN SMALLER SETS. LIKE INTERACTIVE INSTALLATIONS , DJ SETS, SHOPS, AND EVEN PRIVATE LIVING ROOMS.

Great item. Works perfectly for building my own custom DMX lighting foot controller using an Arduino board, this shield, and the DMX simple library. I looked into commercial DMX controller + midi foot pedal options and none really did what I wanted. Plus it meant two pieces of gear instead of one. This will allow me to build my controller exactly the way I want and have one fewer pieces of gear to take to shows.I've seen some other reviews on the same product that complain about the DMX connectors not coming soldered on the board. If soldering a couple pins onto a circuit board is a barrier for you, you probably shouldn't be messing about with Arduino or this DMX shield. The components fit together easily and precisely and soldering took about two minutes. My only complaint is that it's 5 pin DMX. 3 pin is more common, at least in the lighting gear I buy. I solved it with a $3 converter cable, but still, 3 pin would be nice. There is a 3 pin DMX shield out there (not by Tinkerkit). I tried it first and couldn't get it to work. I thought maybe my lights didn't really support DMX or that I was doing something wrong in my Arduino sketch. But I decided to try this Tinkerkit shield and everything worked immediately, even the old sketches that didn't work on the 3-pin shield. IDK, maybe that shield didn't work with DMX Simple. This one does.
