Heartwarming story.
This book did not disappoint. I remember the Film with Tom Courtney over 30 years ago. Never forgotten and the book has more.

Perhaps the most beautiful book I have ever read
I recommend this book to everyone. It is written very simply, almost as though it were autobiographical, with great observation of a people and of the land in which they live. I have already read it twice and intend to read it many more times.

A Life Lesson To Remember
I read this Picador as a young man, forty years ago, on my mother's recommendation. We were both going through challenging life stages. I bought it to read again recently, and enjoyed it afresh.A twenty-something Anglican priest who doesn't know he has only a few years to live is posted upriver to a scattered parish of Native Americans. In hiis time there he'll absorb lessons about respect and restraint, living well with diverse others, being alert and responsive to unexpected turns, going with the flow. What a place to go!The missionary aspects of the story seem anachronistic in 2017, but the story serves no less well than when it was written as a vehicle to promote the timeless goods at its heart.

A very good read
Very moving and warm book which helps to bring the lives of the native Americans to life. To be able to recognise their beliefs and customs and empathise with their fears and struggles of every day . The vicar, Mark, grew in character throughout the book as he became more and more a member of the village. This is a book which I can read over and over again and still find something new in it. I will remember it for a long time
