The best child gate I've found
For 2 years, our family used a position/lock child/pet gate that we would have to either a) climb over or b) take down every time we wanted to use the stairs because #1) we were lazy, #2) we were cheap. With a second child on the way, we knew we had to take the dive and buy a sustainable gate that would provide daily solutions to keeping the kids/dog upstairs or downstairs. This gate works so well that we actually ended up buying a second one a year later (one for upstairs and one for downstairs). The weird thing is although the two gates are from the same company, the newer one lifted up with a lot more pressure, making it more difficult to open with one hand. It was probably a child safety enhancement, but I didn’t like it. To solve that dilemma I unscrewed the handle at the top of the gate and removed the spring. Now the gate works perfectly. Also, if you live in a house with an open floor plan (like we do), you will most likely need to buy the extension kit. Once it’s on, it looks like it’s a part of the gate so you can’t tell the pieces didn’t come together.Installation is very simple and doesn't require any drilling or damage to the walls - it's simply pressure mounted. Just remember you have to REALLY tighten it on so that it closes all the way - if the handle doesn't lock it needs to be on tighter. If installed correctly, the gate is very sturdy. Neither of my kids (or my dog) have been able to knock it down.As a longtime user of this gate, I'm a little surprised by the number of negative reviews (especially recent ones). From my experience with two of the gates, they've been durable and strong (including the second one I just bought a few weeks ago), so I'm not sure if some other people had some bad luck or if there are some quality control issues. I highly recommend this gate and found it worked great for my needs.

Amazing! Only Wish I'd Bought Sooner!
I purchased this gate after buying a different walk through gate. Regalo Easy Open Super Wide Walk Thru Gate - White I had to sell that one because the only way to have it be secure is to screw cups into the doorway. Otherwise it's loose enough for my 24 lb dog to push over.I wish I'd just bought this one in the first place! Sometimes you really do get what you pay for and this is one of those times. Yes, the Regalo gate is 1/2 the price, but totally unsafe. The KidCo gate is amazing. Super easy to install. VERY sturdy. This one isn't moving! Plus it has the bonus of the opening that you walk through being a lot wider than the Regalo one. Plus there is nothing poking out of the opening to catch on your clothes as with the Regalo. It is easy to open and swings either way, which is handy. It's nice and heavy and looks very nice. The dogs are confined, but I can get through with a load of laundry without pulling down a gate or risking life and limb by climbing over one.All in all I highly recommend this gate. It's a great height, easy for the cats to jump over, but high enough to keep the dogs in. Great gate and worth the extra money.

You can buy better quality with lower price
Do not buy it ! I bought 3 different brands, this one is the most expensive one but much worse than the other two. When I opened it I could not believe my eyes that it is rusted in many places. The material is flimsy and the design looks cheap. The other two I bought are cheaper, sturdier, have better looking and have more practical features like stay open and close automatically. It should cut down at least half of the price.Furthermore, be aware that if you plan to use it with Y spindles, the banisters may be damaged because the tension of the gate is too much. We did not recognize it at first but after one day I noticed that the banister bent a little. If you make it looser the door cannot be closed properly.

Good option, but bar at the bottom can be annoying - read on for a better option.
This is a good gate if you are looking for a pressure gate, but I wanted to respond to the people who complain that it doesn't line up, or their kids are able to open it, or it's too wide in the opening when you first line it up. During installation you have to realize that you are pushing the sides of the gate together as you are screwing the tension knobs tighter on each side. This action causes the gate opening to get smaller, and ultimately you want it so small that the two sides of the gate, where the latch is, almost meet entirely. What you'll notice is there's little grooves on each side of the gate where you lock it. These little grooves should be close enough when you flip the latch down so that they fit together and lock. This is what prevents your child from just figuring out how to lift the gate up without having to press the two buttons and lift the lever! Ultimately when we installed this gate, we realized we needed to tighten the tension knobs to the point where the two sides of the locking mechanism amost meet entirely - no joke, there should only be about 1/16 or 1/8 of an inch between them, then you'll engage the little groves when you flip the latch down and your little one won't be able to lift it up. The one bad thing about this gate is the bar across the bottom. I think it would be OK in a doorway, but we are using it on the bottom step of a stairway and I've noticed that my toddler (currently 19 months and walking down the stairs with assistance) has no choice but to step on it at the bottom of the stairs. Of course we have this same problem, and when you step on that last step without shoes, it hurts! Plus ultimately my concern is that once my son is old enough to walk down the stairs on his own, he may trip over the bar (we have to leave the gate up for our child who will arrive in February). If you do choose to use this gate on your stairs, note that if you are installing it on one of the spindles, you can use the tension knobs that come with it on the bottom, but will likely need to buy one set of the 'Y' tension knobs that are sold separately (and work very well). Long story short - take a look at your spindles before ordering. If they're square at the bottom, you'll just need 1 set of 'Y' tension rods. If they're round at the bottom, you'll need to replace both sets of tension knobs with the 'Y' ones. Here's a better option that we have installed at the top of the stairs, and I am purchasing today to replace at the bottom of the stairs: KidCo G22 White Safeway Angle Mount (http://www.amazon.com/KidCo-Angle-Mount-Safeway-White/dp/B006OJIK44/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1418662684&sr=1-1&keywords=KidCo+G22+White+Safeway+Angle+Mount&pebp=1418662707920) - this gate can be installed with hardware (Kidco Stairway Gate Installation Kit - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000P007FI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) so that you don't have to drill into your banisters. They take a little time to install and the instructions aren't the greatest, but it's well worth the effort - the gate installatio kids are extremely study and work very well with the Angle Mount Gate (and you can purchase the angle mount gate even if you are installing on a straight stairway). Good luck!
