Sometimes works--but hard to control. Updated
The problem with these globes is that the opening is too wide. This makes it more likely for air to leak in too fast--and the water to rapidly discharge. If you first plunge a stick in the soil before inserting the stem of the globe, you can see bubbles coming up every few seconds as the water slowly drains until the globe has fully discharged within a few minutes. The same thing happens if I use the same hole after refilling the bulb with water. I have had success with the globes if the soil is wet and I plunge the stem directly into the soil. I think that this works because the dirt partially blocks the stem opening, allowing water to slowly discharge by capillary action. But sometimes the stem is so blocked that very little water is discharged. It is hit or miss. If you use these, you need to monitor carefully after each installation, making sure that there is no stream of bubbles, that the discharge rate is not too fast, and that there is some water flow. After refill, you may want to avoid placing the bulb in the same hole because air leakage may be more likely. The advantages are low price and easy filling. But if I won't buy any more of these.UPDATEI've raised the rating to 3 stars. With some practice, I can get these to work most of the time. With two Dracaena plants in 1 gallon pots, I find that one small bulb in each plant (bulbs each contain 66 cc or 2.3 oz in the spherical part) will empty on an average in 36 hours (in as little as 12 hours, as much as 96 hours--plus or minus 24 hours SD). The rate obviously depends on pot size, type of plant, size of plant, and ambient temperature. I like being able to visually check the water level to know how much water the plants are receiving. I'm careful to place the bulbs at the edges of the pot to avoid root damage from the wide openings in these devices.

I'm sure I must be doing something wrong! These are worthless.
I bought these because we were going on vacation and I didn't have anyone to care for my plants. I tried using them several times and they either emptied all at once flooding the table or didn't empty at all even over several days and shaking them a bit to see if I could get them draining didn't matter. One came badly dented but for the price I figured I wouldn't complain. If anyone knows the secret to getting them to work, please pass it on.

Waste of money
These do absolutely nothing and will not actually hold water for multiple days allowing the plant to drink as needed. The water just runs down into the plant overwatering upfront and was useless while we were out of town. I tried multiple bulbs in multiple plants and got the same result. Would not recommend the plastic!

Doesn't hold water for more than a few minutes
I've tried each one multiple times, fill all the bulbs and all completely drain within a few minutes.I've watered my plants and tried adding the bulbs and still the sameI've looked up if I'm doing something wrong but doesn't seem to actually hold any water for more than a few minutes
